Nettersheim combines visible Roman traces with trails that offer different ways to explore the area. When planning your trip, it is worth distinguishing between the archaeological circular trail, a longer cycling route, and a hiking trail that ends in Bad MĂĽnstereifel. If you are looking for a hotel, these options provide a concrete framework for deciding what to focus on during your stay.

Roman History in the Landscape Park

In the Archaeological Landscape Park, parts of a Roman settlement and the Roman road have been made visible to visitors in the landscape. The circular trail, about 4.5 kilometres long, starts at the Eifel Nature Centre and includes eight stops. Partial reconstructions bring the results of excavations at the vicus of Nettersheim to life. The Roman traces are therefore presented not as a single point of interest, but as part of a route with several stops.

Opened in 1989, the Eifel Nature Centre invites visitors to discover nature and history. This dual perspective suits the different themes that come together in Nettersheim: archaeological traces, plants, and landscape.

Distinguishing Between Circular Trails and Hiking Routes

Via Velo is a 22.5-kilometre circular route, with an estimated travel time of about two to three hours. The Eifel Nature Centre and Tourist Information can be chosen as the starting point. The distance and estimated time give you a concrete guide for planning a cycling tour.

The Eifel Herbal Trail offers a different focus: stretching 20 kilometres from the Eifelsteig in Nettersheim to Bad MĂĽnstereifel, it introduces hikers to local herbs and plants through all the senses. While the Landscape Park and Via Velo are circular routes, this trail runs from Nettersheim to a destination in Bad MĂĽnstereifel. The route type is a separate consideration in your planning, alongside the choice between cycling and hiking.

Nature Destinations on Foot or by Bike

From the Eifel Nature Centre, orchid meadows, Roman temples, and fossil-rich areas can be reached on foot or by bike via various themed trails. This means the options extend beyond the archaeological loop: you can also focus on plants, temples, or fossils. The destinations and two possible modes of transport offer different ways to plan your stay.

Getting Here and Finding a Hotel

Nettersheim is accessible by train via the Cologne–Trier Eifel railway line. The Eifel Nature Centre is the starting point for the circular trail in the Landscape Park and can also be chosen as the starting point for Via Velo. You can also factor the train connection into your travel plans.

More Destinations in the Wider Euskirchen Travel Region

The wider Euskirchen travel region offers other distinct attractions: the Römerthermen Zülpich present 2,000 years of bathing history above an exceptionally well-preserved Roman bath complex. Near Effelsberg, the Planetary Trail, which has been in place since autumn 2004 and is just under 800 metres long, uses information boards to introduce visitors to the planets in our solar system and the Sun. These attractions have a different focus from Nettersheim’s trails and archaeological traces.
