Schöneseiffen: Highland, Hiking Trails and Local History
Accommodation in Schöneseiffen
Schöneseiffen is located on the Dreiborn Highland above the Olef Valley and close to Eifel National Park. Its high elevation offers wide-ranging views of the surrounding landscape. At almost 623 metres, Hollerscheid is the highest point on the Dreiborn Highland; Schöneseiffen is part of Drömmede’s “Highlands.”
Highland and Hiking Trails
There are numerous marked hiking trails around Schöneseiffen, running from the open highland down into the valleys of the Olef. The nearby Oleftalsperre reservoir and Hellenthal Wildlife Park add to the range of nature and leisure experiences. You can plan your day around your interest in hiking or other nature and leisure activities.
One specific example is the “Around Schöneseiffen (33)” circular hiking trail. The 6 km route starts at Schafbachmühle and climbs to Schöneseiffen. It follows sunny paths around the village and returns to Schafbachmühle through the Schafbach Valley. The paths are well maintained and also suitable for all-terrain strollers. Within the wider network of trails, this tour is the more clearly defined option: its length, ascent, starting point, and return route are specified.
Local History and Remembrance
The Schöneseiffen war memorial features a red sandstone cross engraved with the names of those who fell in the First World War. Twenty-two German war dead are buried at the Schleiden-Schöneseiffen war cemetery. The two memorial sites emphasize different things: the names of those who fell in the First World War at the memorial, and the number of people buried at the war cemetery. The first harvest thanksgiving parade in Schöneseiffen took place in 1953.
Events in the Village
The Schöneseiffen Music Association holds its “Youth Day” every year. Visitors can see and try out many different instruments. This specific event adds a musical dimension to the nature and hiking options. Check the dates before your trip.
Schleiden as the Wider Travel Destination
The wider travel destination of Schleiden offers additional natural and cultural attractions to include in your plans. At the Bird Watching Station on Lake Urft, you can observe cormorants, great crested grebes, ducks, and grey herons. Two high-quality telescopes with 15x magnification are installed at different heights, allowing wheelchair users to watch birds comfortably too. At the Vogelsang IP International Place in the Eifel National Park Star Park, the observatory run by the “Stars Without Borders” astronomy workshop regularly hosts public skywatching events. The Eifel National Park Centre at the Vogelsang IP Forum in Schleiden is home to the accessible, interactive “Wildnis(t)räume” nature exhibition for people of all ages. The centre is open year-round and serves as a starting point for regular ranger tours through Eifel National Park. Check the ranger tour dates before your visit. Another astronomy option in the wider travel destination of Schleiden is the Vogelsang IP “Star Park” Star Viewpoint, equipped for exploring the night sky on your own.
