Stolberg (Rhld.) can be explored through a variety of themes: the lanes of the Old Town and its history, the distinctive copper courtyards, and exhibitions on the landscape and forest. When planning your visit, you can decide whether you are primarily interested in historic architectural styles, the town’s early history, or working with wood and nature. Each theme offers a different focus and opens up a different perspective on Stolberg.

Old Town and castle: Stolberg’s history

A leisurely stroll through the lanes of Stolberg’s Old Town reveals new, appealing views time and again, while also bringing history to life. The origins of Stolberg Castle and the town also date back to the 12th century. The castle and town therefore share a long historical timeline. If you are interested in Stolberg’s development, a walk through the Old Town offers a different way to explore it than a focused look at the architectural features of individual courtyards.

Copper courtyards and their varied architectural styles

The early modern copper courtyards are characteristic of Stolberg. Their architectural styles differ according to when they were built, so there is no single pattern that applies to all of them. The period in which each courtyard was built is a useful point of reference for understanding these differences. The Rose copper courtyard combines historic architecture with a present-day use: it was built around 1600 and now serves as an arts and crafts centre with studios for several artists. Its construction period and contemporary artistic use thus sit side by side, while the copper courtyards as a whole present a more varied architectural picture.

Schlangenberg: exhibition on nature and mining history

At the information centre for the Schlangenberg nature reserve in Breinig, an exhibition explores geological, mining-history, and natural environment topics relating to Schlangenberg and its calamine flora. Exhibits include a 3D model of Schlangenberg and its surroundings, as well as a diorama depicting a typical section of the landscape. Preserved natural elements from the flora and fauna are arranged in front of a painted backdrop. The exhibition therefore ranges from geological and historical aspects to the habitats depicted. If you are planning a guided tour for a group, you must make arrangements in advance.

Woodworking at the Zweifall sawmill museum

The Zweifall sawmill museum displays historic tools for harvesting timber, as well as equipment for measuring and marking wood. Images document how timber transport evolved from the use of horses to trucks. A media station offers eight short films, including ones on sawmill technology, felling trees in the past and today, the functions of forests, and charcoal burning. Together, these offer insights into different aspects of forestry and woodwork: tools and equipment, the history of transport, and films about technology and forest-related topics. Unlike the Schlangenberg information centre, the focus here is on timber harvesting, measuring, transport, and sawmill technology.

Stolberg within the wider destination of the Aachen region

For broader travel planning, the Aachen region provides a distinct regional context. It lies in Germany’s far west, near the Netherlands and Belgium in the three-country border region. Diverse natural landscapes, historic town centres, and extensive cycling and hiking infrastructure characterise the wider area. One specific regional option is the Blausteinsee Water Trail: this themed circular route is 5.2 kilometres long and starts and ends at the Dürwiß-Blausteinsee car park. This regional route adds another option to Stolberg’s local themes without replacing the distinctive features of the Old Town, the copper courtyards, or the exhibitions.
