Venwegen can be explored via a variety of hiking trails and distinctive local landmarks. The options range from a family-friendly loop to trails with themed stations or a contemplative focus. The landscapes on the outskirts, St. Brigida Church and Venwegen’s historic role as a stop on the route from Kornelimünster through the High Fens are also part of the picture.

Landscape and Local Landmarks

A small orchard lies on the southern edge of the village. Landscape Plan 4, dated February 28, 2005, designates it as a protected landscape feature. On the eastern edge of the village, the same plan designates a protected stand of trees and shrubs on a slope. Typical shrubs of calcareous soils grow there, including blackthorn, hawthorn and hornbeam. The plan thus shows two distinct landscapes side by side: the orchard in the south and the stand of trees and shrubs with its characteristic species in the east.

St. Brigida Church is located at Vennstraße 91 in Venwegen. It has been lovingly restored and maintained. Venwegen’s former role as a stop on the route from Kornelimünster through the High Fens is another historical connection.

Hiking Trails and Orientation

The signposted Venwegen Family Loop is around four kilometers long, easy to walk, family-friendly and suitable for strollers. The start and finish are at the Birkenhof car park in Stolberg-Venwegen. The route passes through wooded areas and alongside meadows. Observation and hands-on stations explore forest edges, insects, fungi, calamine and the AndreashĂĽtte.

The signposted Route 07, “Venwegen Circular Trail,” is just under 9.6 kilometers long and starts and finishes at the Birkenhof car park. The hike follows paths through forests, along stream valleys and beside field edges. Six stations explore how forests, water and ecosystems adapt to climate change. Highlights include the panoramic view from Venwegen across the Münsterländchen and Aachen to the Three-Country Point, as well as the Vichtbach stream as a natural area with a history.

The “Gedankenschleife” is an approximately 13-kilometer route around Venwegen, designed to encourage reflection. The route lengths provide a straightforward guide to choosing between the options described: around four kilometers on the Family Loop, just under 9.6 kilometers on Route 07 and approximately 13 kilometers on the Gedankenschleife. The themes also differ, ranging from hands-on stations and climate adaptation to a contemplative walking experience.

The Copper Route also offers a distinctive local connection: it passes the AndreashĂĽtte and continues to the Birkenhof forest restaurant/hotel in the Venwegen district. You can take a break there before continuing along the final three kilometers of the route.

For the Vital-Parcours, the Venwegen hiking car park opposite the Birkenhof restaurant offers an additional starting point. You can park your car for free at the Venwegen-Birkenhof car park. The bus stop closest to the Vital-Parcours starting point is called Vennwegen SĂĽd and is served by various bus routes. If you plan to travel by bus, check the current timetables in advance.

The exhibition covers geological, mining-history and natural-environment topics relating to Schlangenberg and its calamine flora. It includes a 3D model of Schlangenberg and its surroundings, as well as a diorama featuring preserved natural elements from the local flora and fauna against a painted backdrop. Group tours are available by prior arrangement.

The early modern copper courtyards are also characteristic of Stolberg. Their architectural styles vary according to when they were built; there is no single uniform style. The Rose Copper Courtyard was built around 1600 and is now an arts and crafts center with studios used by several artists.
