Discover Eschweiler
Accommodation in Eschweiler
Eschweiler combines a strong carnival tradition with culture at the former Talbahnhof and opportunities to relax at Blaustein Lake. These different highlights can help you decide where to stay: you can focus on the carnival season, paths and leisure activities around the lake, or local architectural and event history. This gives you a starting point for a hotel search that suits your planned stay.
Carnival and local traditions
Carnival, known in Eschweiler as “Eischwiele Fastelovend,” has been celebrated there for almost 170 years. The town has 22 carnival societies, which kick off the carnival season from November 11 with hundreds of events in halls and tents. The highlight of each season is the Rose Monday parade: on Rose Monday, it winds for nearly six kilometers through the streets and lanes of the town on the Inde, with around 6,500 carnival revelers and about 250 vehicles. Route details may vary from year to year. If your stay depends on the parade, check the relevant event dates and route information before traveling.
A tour of the Eschweiler Carnival Museum showcases the carnival traditions of Eschweiler and Stolberg. On display are around 3,000 carnival medals from Eschweiler and around 2,000 from Stolberg; these collection figures may change over time. Unlike the Rose Monday parade, the focus here is on the traditions and medals of both towns.
Blaustein Lake: recreation and trails
Blaustein Lake is a local recreation area created in the former “Zukunft West” lignite mining district. Visitors can enjoy water sports, hiking, cycling and nature. The lakeside center at Blaustein Lake offers dining, the Naturhaus Rheinland, an open-air stage and a playground for visitors of all ages. As operating arrangements may change, it is advisable to check the latest information about the facilities before visiting.
The trails differ in length and purpose. The Historic Hiking Trail O at Blaustein Lake is 14.3 kilometers long and serves as a memorial trail to former villages that had to make way for open-cast lignite mining. A regional comparison within the Aachen City Region is the Blausteinsee Water Trail: it is a 5.2-kilometer themed circular route starting and ending at the Dürwiß-Blausteinsee parking lot. The O Trail focuses on remembering the former villages and covering a longer distance; the Water Trail’s defining features are its circular route and fixed start and end point. Signage and conditions on the Historic Hiking Trail O may change; check the current situation before setting out.
Talbahnhof and architectural history
Since November 1994, the former neoclassical “Eschweiler-Tal” railway station building has been a cultural hub in Eschweiler. Its program includes local and regional events, as well as a forum for nationally and internationally renowned artists who perform regularly. This makes the Talbahnhof a cultural point of interest alongside the seasonal carnival events.
The Talbahnhof has a bistro, a restaurant, a beer garden, exhibition spaces and a large event hall with capacity for up to 200 people. If you want to attend a particular event or use a specific facility, check the latest information beforehand, as operating arrangements may change.
Eschweiler-Weisweiler also offers a tangible link to local history: the remains of the former moated castle, Burg Weisweiler, lie directly beside the Catholic parish church of St. Severin. The term “former moated castle” refers to its previous function; the remains of the complex are the tangible point of reference on site.
