Alsdorf brings together energy and mining, parks, a zoo and paths through a nature reserve. This gives you a clear starting point for planning your trip: Would you like to learn about the history of energy through an exhibition, see traces of former coal mining or spend time in green surroundings? The sights offer different answers to these questions, each shaping its own part of the cityscape.

Energy and mining in the exhibition and landscape

At the ENERGETICON, the permanent exhibition “From the Sun to the Sun” traces the path of energy. The standard route is about 700 metres long and includes around 30 stations, where energy is presented in a highly visual, hands-on way. This makes the subject accessible both through the course of the exhibition and through individual stations. Museum tours can be booked; check the current arrangements before your visit.

The history of mining is also present outdoors. The 30-metre-high headframe of the former Grube Anna mine stands at the head of Annapark. From its viewing platform, you can see the entire former mine site and the newly created energy park. Guided tours of the headframe and other tours about mining and energy can be booked through the adjacent tourist information centre at the Energeticon. As tour availability should be checked, it is advisable to confirm the current offerings before your trip.

Annapark was created after coal mining ended, on a large part of the former mine site on the outskirts of Alsdorf. Today, its character is defined by spacious lawns and seating areas. The headframe, former mine site and energy park can be viewed as different aspects of a place shaped by its mining history.

Zoo, Broichbachtal and paths through green surroundings

Alsdorfer Weiher Zoo offers a different perspective on Alsdorf: More than 300 animals from 30 predominantly native species live across an area of more than 20 hectares. The figures for the area and animal population are approximate and may change. The Broichbachtal recreation area is directly adjacent to the zoo. It has playgrounds, barbecue and picnic facilities on land and by the water, pedal boats, fishing ponds and a miniature golf course. Check the availability of individual facilities before visiting.

The recreation area, including the zoo, serves as a starting point or destination for various cycling and hiking routes. They lead through Broichbachtal or past mining relics in Alsdorf. If you want to explore the natural surroundings in particular, there are paths through the roughly 42-hectare Broichbachtal nature reserve on the edge of central Alsdorf. You can choose between a route through a protected natural area and tours with a stronger focus on mining relics.

Historic sites and practical information

Alsdorf Castle adds a historic note alongside the more recent mining history. It is a typical Rhenish moated castle; the first records of a knight’s estate date back to the 13th century. The wide moat no longer exists. Together with the preserved headframe, the castle shows that Alsdorf’s history cannot be reduced to a single era.

For the “Around the Mining Town of Alsdorf” route, the Euregiobahn to Annapark station or stop is the designated access point. Check current train services and connections before travelling. The licensed tourist information centre at the Energeticon provides advice on destinations in the Grünmetropole and offers individual tours through natural areas and along cycling and hiking trails. For these offerings, too, it is advisable to confirm availability in advance.

Beyond Alsdorf, the Aachen City Region is the broader travel and orientation framework. It lies in the Three-Country Region near the Netherlands and Belgium, in Germany’s far west. The city region brings together a variety of natural landscapes, historic town centres and an extensive cycling and hiking network. This regional perspective complements Alsdorf’s local themes without replacing them: the exhibition, mining landscape, zoo and Broichbachtal remain the concrete points of reference for deciding what you would like to experience locally.
