Roetgen: Village Walks, Nature and Hotels
Accommodation in Roetgen
Roetgen offers different ways to explore the village: the village walk connects historic sights in the village centre with panoramic views along the northern walking trail; other routes pass old thatched-roof houses or focus on the history of the cloth industry. The wild boar park, thermal baths and landscape around Struffelt also each have their own appeal. When planning your trip, you can choose between local history, hiking and observing nature.
Local History on Two Village Walks
The Roetgen village walk connects sights in the village centre with views along the northern walking trail. Highlights include the historic Marienkapelle (Chapel of St Mary) and the listed Protestant Breitkirche. Those interested in architectural history will find both as distinctive stops on the same walk; the panoramic views are also part of the route’s character.
The easy Schleebach village walk has a different focus. It follows the historic Schleebach hillside drainage ditch, passes through the municipal forest and goes by old thatched-roof houses in the centre of Roetgen. The two walks can therefore be distinguished by their themes: historic sights and panoramic views on one, a stream ditch, forest and traditional houses on the other.
Routes with Regional History
The 8.3-kilometre Weaver’s Trail explores the history of Roetgen’s cloth industry. The Old Church Path, in turn, follows a historic connection between Roetgen and Stolberg: in the 18th century, Protestant families from Roetgen regularly used it to reach the Reformed congregation in Stolberg. The route was almost 19 kilometres long. The two paths thus differ both in their historical associations and in their stated lengths.
The RAVeL route offers another point of reference for cyclists. Coming from Belgium, it reaches the municipal area of Roetgen in Münsterwald and soon leads to the former Roetgen railway station. The station is described as a former point on the route, not as a place with current rail service.
Nature, Wildlife Watching and Circular Trails
The approximately five-hectare Roetgen wild boar park lies below the hiking trail at Schleebachgraben, near the “Im Todt” car park. There you can watch wild boar at close range. The park is free of charge and open to visitors all day; check the current conditions before visiting.
The Struffelt nature reserve lies nearby, south of Roetgen-Rott. It covers around 118 hectares and consists of open heathland on a hilltop within the surrounding woodland. The heath areas, with their scattered trees, provide suitable breeding grounds for tree pipits and stonechats. This gives the area particular significance for birdlife as well as its open landscape.
The Eifelsteig trail crosses the municipal area of Roetgen, passing through the Struffelt nature reserve and skirting the Dreilägerbach Dam. The dam lies between Roetgen and Rott and was built from 1909 to 1911. Hiking information boards are located at the car parks around the dam; marked circular trails also start there. This area therefore offers both information to help you find your way and signposted circular routes.
Thermal Baths as Another Travel Option
The Roetgen Therme offers seven different saunas and hot-air baths, as well as five pools, including an outdoor saltwater pool. If you would like to include this in your travel plans, check the opening conditions before setting off.
