Boock: Village Church, Local History Museum and Trails
Accommodation in Boock
Boock combines a main street lined with lime trees and front gardens with traces of its rural history and trails into the countryside. The municipality is in the district of Vorpommern-Greifswald in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Lindenstraße is the village’s main street; well-kept lime trees and flowering front gardens define its appearance. Specific themes for a trip include the fieldstone church, Üns Heimatstuf, a walk to Kalkloch and a cycling route starting in Boock.
Village Church and Living Traditions
Boock Village Church is a fieldstone church dating from around 1500. In the second half of the 18th century, the church was extended to the west; the tower was added in the 19th century. The building therefore reflects different periods: the early fieldstone church, the western extension and the later addition of the tower.
Fastelabend is also part of the local culture. The Boocker Dörpschaft keeps the tradition alive; its members portray figures from rural life in the 15th century. This local custom brings to life depictions of rural life in times past.
Üns Heimatstuf: Life and Work in the Countryside
Üns Heimatstuf is located on the grounds of the old school. The institution presents life and work in the past across two buildings with several rooms. The collection includes craft items from baking, tailoring and shoemaking. Old agricultural machinery is displayed in the 200-square-metre outdoor area. The range of topics thus spans various crafts and agricultural technology.
Countryside, Walks and Cycling Routes
A 1.5-kilometre walk from Boock leads to Kalkloch; there is a rest area nearby. The Holländermühle windmill, which can be visited, is about two kilometres from Boock in the direction of Blankensee. It was built around the 17th century and reconstructed in 2001.
A cycling route runs from Boock via Löcknitz–Glashütte and returns via Pampow and Mewegen. For walkers, the trail to Kalkloch is a specific 1.5-kilometre route; the cycling route passes through several named places. Achtersee is a dried-up lake where small orchids grow.
Guests can enjoy traditional German cuisine at the Zur Goldtonne restaurant.
Vorpommern-Greifswald: The Wider Region
The wider travel destination of Vorpommern-Greifswald offers more to explore beyond Boock. The Randow Valley can be explored by boat, on foot along cycling and hiking trails, by horse-drawn carriage or by bicycle. According to the district’s description, the three nature parks cover almost 40 percent of the district’s area; this share may change as a result of administrative changes.
The district also offers other cultural and historical attractions: In Greifswald, the Pomeranian State Museum displays the Croy Tapestry from 1554, a unique cultural and historical artefact from the Reformation era. In Anklam, the Otto Lilienthal Museum is a biographical technical museum dedicated to aviation pioneer, mechanical engineer and humanist Otto Lilienthal, whose hometown was Anklam.
