Sponholz: Manor House and Rühlower Os
Accommodation in Sponholz
The castle-like manor house stands in the town of Sponholz; the Rühlower Os nature reserve is in Rühlow, a district of the municipality, and the annual threshing festival is also a municipal-level event. These different scales help you distinguish between topics that relate directly to the town and those that belong to the wider region.
Manor House and the Estate’s History
The castle-like manor house in Sponholz was built by master builder Christoph Julius Löwe between 1741 and 1745. Architecturally, it is a Baroque rendered building with a gabled roof. A rendered building has an exterior covered in render; a gabled roof can be recognized by its two sloping roof surfaces. This helps you identify the building’s architectural style and roof shape.
The history of the estate is also part of the manor house’s historical context. In 1785, Sponholz itself became a domain in connection with the exchange of the estate for the Staven domain. The construction period and the later change of status mark two distinct stages: the manor house was built in the 1740s, and the domain was established in 1785.
The Rühlower Os in the Municipality of Sponholz
The Rühlower Os nature reserve is located in Rühlow, a district of the municipality of Sponholz. At about 1 kilometer long, the Rühlower Os is one of the smallest eskers in the Mecklenburg Ice Age Landscape Geopark. In its northern section lies the Osauge, a depression resembling an amphitheater.
The landscape is shaped by sands deposited like a dam during the last Ice Age. Numerous dry grassland species have established themselves there alongside woody plants. Regular maintenance and sheep grazing help preserve these species. The Rühlower Os therefore combines a distinctive landform with targeted landscape management. For planning your visit, it is also important to note that there are no public paths in the nature reserve.
Threshing Festival in the Municipality
The threshing festival takes place annually in the municipality of Sponholz. It introduces a large number of visitors to rural traditions, particularly historical working methods. Unlike the permanent architectural and landscape features, the festival is a recurring event. Check the date for the year in question if you would like to plan your visit around it.
Nature Destinations in the Mecklenburg Lake District
The Mecklenburg Lake District provides a broader regional context than Sponholz’s town and municipal attractions. Müritz National Park is part of this region and is characterized by forests, bogs, lakes, and extensive meadows. Its hiking trail covers the national park’s landscape types and distinctive features in nine stages. The route passes lakes, winds through ancient forests, goes by inland dunes, and leads to the source of the Havel.
Certified nature and landscape guides offer informative tours through Müritz National Park. These include guided visits to the UNESCO World Heritage beech forest in Serrahn and tours from the water. This lets you choose between a nine-stage trail and guided tours among the region’s nature activities.
Another destination in the Mecklenburg Lake District is the Damerower Werder bison reserve. It is located on a peninsula in Lake Kölpin and in the Nossentiner/Schwinzer Heath Nature Park. Visitors can observe the animals there. The reserve also has a forest adventure trail with climbing opportunities, an ant house, an exhibition with touch-and-see panels, and a dendrophone.
