Rastow: Cycling Routes and Photographic Technology

Rastow is particularly easy to plan a trip around by focusing on two themes: regional cycling routes and photographic technology. It is important to distinguish between locations: other attractions are not in the town of Rastow itself, but elsewhere in the municipality. The following sections therefore distinguish the town from destinations in Fahrbinde and Kraak.

Comparing Cycling Routes

The regional R 11 cycle route is 75 kilometres long and runs from Boizenburg via Hagenow and Rastow to Mirow. Rastow lies along the described route; the distance given refers to the entire route. Tour 15, “Through the Kraaker Tannen to the Redefin State Stud,” is 73 kilometres long and passes through the Kraaker Tannen and Rastow. Based on the stated total distances, Tour 15 is two kilometres shorter than the R 11. The described routes also differ: the places named for the R 11 are Boizenburg, Hagenow, Rastow and Mirow; Tour 15 names the Kraaker Tannen and the Redefin State Stud in its title. Photographic Technology and Technology Museum

The permanent exhibition “Photographic Technology” is considered an attraction in Rastow and is maintained and expanded by the Dunkelkammer e. V. association. The DUNKELKAMMER RASTOW Museum is a technology museum in the local community hall. It displays historic still and movie cameras, contact printing equipment and darkroom equipment, as well as slide and film projectors. The collection also includes radios and television sets, reel-to-reel tape recorders and record players. Its scope thus ranges from photographic and film technology to image- and sound-transmission equipment.

One special feature of the museum is its walk-in camera obscura. In sufficient sunlight, it projects moving, colourful images. This works differently from the technical devices on display: here the image is created through optical projection, while the collection comprises historic photographic, film and playback equipment. Together, the exhibition and the museum give the theme of photographic technology in Rastow a distinct cultural expression.

Other Destinations in the Municipality

Fahrbinde and Kraak are other destinations within the municipality and should be distinguished from the town of Rastow. Fahrbinde’s historic centre is considered an attraction. The Stillfriedstube commemorates the Low German poet Felix Stillfried (1851–1910), who was known by the name Adolf Brandt. A commander of the Knights Hospitaller was based in Kraak from 1315. The Johanniterkirche contains a carved wooden Marian altarpiece dating from around 1500.

Kraak’s features also include a lake with a bathing area and a wildlife park. The Kraaker Mühle and a fish ladder are located in the Kraaker Tannen. These destinations complement Rastow’s local features with their own cultural-historical and natural themes within the municipality. This distinction is useful when planning a trip: the cycling routes pass through Rastow, while individual attractions and natural features are located in Fahrbinde or Kraak.

Getting There and Finding Your Way

Rastow railway station provides a connection on the Berlin–Schwerin train route. If you plan to arrive by train, check the current timetable before travelling. The municipality’s road connections also include the L72, formerly designated the B106, and the A24/A14 motorway interchange in the immediate vicinity. These road details refer to the municipality of Rastow. When choosing a hotel, it may therefore be useful to consider both your planned route of arrival and the destinations you want to visit during your stay.
