Discover Kirchboitzen
Accommodation in Kirchboitzen
For planning your visit to Kirchboitzen, St. Michaelis, the annual Boitzer Market and the bus connections offer useful reference points. The church combines a long architectural history with seasonal opening hours and cultural uses. The market, usually held in October, provides another date to keep in mind. If you are planning a stay, check the opening hours, event programme and timetable for your travel dates.
St. Michaelis: architectural history and culture
St. Michaelis was first mentioned in a document in 1203. The present church building dates from 1862 to 1864, while the tower’s fieldstone section dates from 1742. After a fire in 1945, the church interior was rebuilt. These dates therefore mark different chapters in the building’s history: its first mention, an older section of the tower, the present building and the restoration of the interior after the fire.
For church visits, St. Michaelis is open daily from 08:00 to 18:00, from 1 April to 31 October. The church is also used for theatre performances, art exhibitions and readings. If you include a visit in your travel plans, check the seasonal opening hours in advance. For a specific event, it is worth checking the exact date.
Boitzer Market and getting there
The Boitzer Market is held annually in the centre of Kirchboitzen. Historically, it was known as the Sülzenmarkt; it is usually held on the first Wednesday in October. If you are planning a trip around the market, this weekday is a useful guide, but it is no substitute for that year’s programme. So check the specific event dates before arranging your trip around it.
Bus services connect Kirchboitzen with Walsrode as well as Vethem, Südkampen, Nordkampen, Böhme, Rethem and Ludwigslust. The listed routes are 550, 500 and 510. If you are travelling by bus or planning local trips, check the current timetable for your travel date: routes and times may change. This lets you plan your connection based on the actual service available that day, rather than relying solely on general route information.
More to explore in the wider Walsrode destination
The wider Walsrode destination offers its own cultural and nature-related attractions. At Walsrode Abbey, public guided tours cover the abbey’s more than 1,000-year history and the present-day life of the Christian women’s community. From 1 April to 31 October, tours take place daily except Mondays at 15:00. The abbey lies on the Jacobusweg Lüneburger Heide pilgrimage route. If you plan to join a tour, check the seasonal schedule before your trip.
Weltvogelpark Walsrode covers 24 hectares and is home to 4,000 birds from 650 species. Its attractions include a flight show described as the largest in Europe, taking audiences on a journey around the world; show times may vary. A four-kilometre circular trail leads through the park landscape. Walsrode also has the 16-kilometre Löns circular hiking trail (RWW 8), which runs from Walsrode via the Löns grave, Tietlingen and Meinerdingen and back to Walsrode. The four kilometres in the park and the 16 kilometres of the hiking trail give you two clearly different distances for reference; conditions on the hiking trail may vary.
The Rischmannshof Heath Museum in Walsrode showcases the development of the rural landscape in the Lüneburg Heath. The upper floor houses a section on local history and a Hermann Löns room. A stair granary dating from 1669 was also relocated to the museum. Another historic building is the bakehouse from Südkampen, dating from 1752 and the focal point of the annual baking days. The wider destination therefore offers everything from abbey history and museum exhibits to a bird park and hiking trail, while Kirchboitzen has its own local highlights in St. Michaelis and the Boitzer Market.
