Schwarmstedt: Cycling Routes, the Leine and Culture
Accommodation in Schwarmstedt
Schwarmstedt is a recognised resort on the edge of the LĂĽneburg Heath and lies just outside Hanover. When planning a stay, cycling routes, the Leine and historic sites offer different points of interest. If you are looking for a hotel in Schwarmstedt, you can start by considering whether your trip is mainly about cycling, culture or a tour on the water.
Cycling routes and a specific circular tour
The LĂĽneburg Heath Cycle Route and the Leine-Heath Cycle Route cross Schwarmstedt. In addition, a suggested 54-kilometre circular route starts in Schwarmstedt and passes through varied woodland and meadow landscapes in the direction of Gilten. This circular tour is distinct from the two cycle routes that cross the town: its length, direction and landscape are specified. Check the suggested route before setting off so that your plans are based on the current route information.
The Leine and water touring
Schwarmstedt lies on the Leine; north of the town, the river flows into the Aller. The Leine harbour has a landing stage and is a starting point for water tourers. Boaters can stay overnight in the harbour building of the Schwarmstedt Angling Association. This overnight option is exclusively for boaters; confirm the arrangements before travelling. It is therefore distinct from the general search for a hotel.
Culture and history
The history of Uhle-Hof dates back to the 15th century. Since 1986, the grounds have been used for public and cultural events as well as weddings. The grounds feature a bronze sculpture depicting the 13 villages of the Schwarmstedt collective municipality in the form of owls. Also located there is “Der Uhle-Boom,” a bronze sculpture by local artist Siegfried Steege.
St. Lawrence’s Church was first mentioned in a deed of donation around 1150. Frescoes dating from the 15th century were uncovered in 1971/72. Historic furnishings include a baptismal font from 1528 and a Renaissance pulpit from 1608. The dates refer to different periods: the medieval mention and frescoes are followed by furnishings from later centuries.
The Alte Burg is a rare type of Baroque half-timbered building and was built in 1632. It is privately owned and can only be viewed from the outside. The Rittergut von Lenthe is also privately owned and can only be viewed from the outside. If you plan to visit both sites, you will be viewing their exteriors, not visiting their interiors.
Harry’s Museum of Mechanical Music presents a collection of mechanical musical instruments. It also displays and demonstrates masterpieces of mechanical music from its beginnings through 1920. This gives the museum a different cultural focus from the town’s historic buildings and artworks: here, mechanical music takes centre stage.
Market and getting there
The farmers’ market has been held every Friday afternoon in the town hall square since 1996. Farmers and direct sellers from the Aller-Leine Valley offer their products there. If the market is part of your travel plans, check the date before travelling.
By car, Schwarmstedt can be reached via a junction with the A 7; the town is also on federal highway 214 between Nienburg/Weser and Celle. The Schwarmstedt–Lindwedel–Bennemühlen railway line is included in the range of services available to GVH MobilCard users. Check the current fare details and your specific connection before travelling. This lets you consider the road access and the railway line’s special fare arrangement separately when planning your trip.
