In Fintel, local history, religious art and a circular trail for hiking and Nordic walking come together. The “Schimmes Hoff” local heritage house features a permanent exhibition about Friedrich Freudenthal and includes historic buildings and exhibits from different periods. St. Anthony’s Church adds to this cultural focus, while the NORDPFAD Haxloher Erde offers a distinct opportunity to get active outdoors.

Local Heritage House: Buildings and Collections

The “Schimmes Hoff” local heritage house in Fintel features a permanent exhibition about the local poet Friedrich Freudenthal. The heritage house includes a two-post Lower Saxon farmhouse dating from 1771 and a staircase granary dating from 1760. Both buildings are listed. Their dates make for a direct comparison: the staircase granary is eleven years older than the Lower Saxon farmhouse. The architecture and exhibition cover different themes, from building history to the legacy of Freudenthal.

The exhibits include objects from the Stone and Bronze Ages, historic German currencies and school supplies from times gone by. Alongside its permanent exhibition about the local poet, the heritage house therefore also covers evidence of prehistory, monetary history and everyday school life. Visitors interested in cultural history will find a variety of subjects brought together in one place, rather than a focus on just one period or collection.

Church and Circular Trail in Fintel

St. Anthony’s Church in Fintel houses carved wooden figures. They come from the remains of various altars in medieval predecessor churches. Their origins link the visible carvings to the history of earlier church buildings. As an open church for cyclists, St. Anthony’s Church is open daily from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. during the summer half-year. Visitors can also stop by for a moment of reflection and prayer outside service times.

The 10.5 km NORDPFAD Haxloher Erde is a circular trail for hiking and Nordic walking. The start and finish are at Melkhus Fintel in Fintel. Its set length and circular route give it a different focus from the town’s cultural and historical attractions. Melkhus Fintel serves milkshakes, quark, yogurt, ice cream and homemade cake. As it is a seasonal business, check whether Melkhus is open before planning a visit.
