Lehrte: Find hotels for cycling and cultural experiences

Lehrte can be experienced from different perspectives through cycling and discovery tours, green spaces, and historic memorial sites. Several specific options are available to help you plan: 16 discovery tours explore Lehrte and its districts, the medicinal herb garden has a botanical focus, and Hohnhorst Park brings together nature, culture, and recreational sports. This lets you choose the themes for your stay without treating the different offerings as interchangeable.

Discovery Tours and Cycling Routes in Lehrte

The 16 discovery tours can be done on foot, by bicycle, or by car. To prepare, you can start the tours in Komoot, download them as GPX files, or print them as PDFs. QR stations along the tours provide information about buildings, monuments, churches, and Stolpersteine. This also lets you choose a route based on the topics you would like to focus on along the way.

For cycling, two tours of different lengths are available. “Waters in and around Lehrte” is a family cycling tour through nature and is around 60 kilometers long. It can be ridden in stages using several train stations. “Following the Storks” covers about 20 kilometers and leads to stork nests in several of Lehrte’s districts and in Lehrte itself. The approximate distances make them easy to compare: the waters route is significantly longer, while the stork tour explores a specific nature theme over a shorter distance. Which one is right for your stay also depends on whether you would like to plan a longer route in stages or a shorter tour.

Medicinal Herb Garden and Hohnhorst Park

The medicinal herb garden in the park of Lehrte Hospital opened in spring 2009 as a Garden Region project. Around 200 medicinal plants grow on a 240-square-meter mound; their composition may change over time. The combination of a compact area and a wide variety of plants gives the garden its distinctive theme. Check current access arrangements before your visit.

Hohnhorst Park has a different focus: covering around 28 hectares, it brings together nature, culture, and recreational sports. Compared with the plant mound, this is on a much larger scale; at the same time, the park’s theme extends beyond plants. If you would like to include nature, cultural topics, and exercise in your plans, the park complements the more narrowly botanical focus of the medicinal herb garden.

Historic Memorial Sites

Lehrte’s history is another possible focus. Between 2000 and 2011, 30 historically significant buildings received bronze plaques. This describes a project carried out over several years at buildings in Lehrte and complements the historical topics covered by the discovery tours.

The Stolpersteine are a separate memorial site: 21 were laid in Lehrte in 2012. They commemorate people who were driven from their homes during the Nazi era. In this way, the historical themes of buildings and monuments also lead to remembrance of the people who were affected by persecution.
