Hooksiel: North Sea beach, Hooksmeer and maritime culture
Accommodation in Hooksiel
Hooksiel combines activities at the North Sea beach with Hooksmeer, walking routes and maritime culture. If you are looking for a hotel in Hooksiel, these different themes can help guide your choice of destination: water sports, routes through the town and cultural sites each offer their own focus.
Water sports and Hooksmeer
At the North Sea beach in Hooksiel, there are opportunities for surfing, kitesurfing and sailing. The nearby Hooksmeer offers water skiing and an aqua park. For your planning, it makes a difference which of these activities is your priority: the options listed are spread between the beach and the inland lake, offering two distinct water sports focuses.
Hooksmeer is an inland lake near Hooksiel covering around 60 hectares. Along the walking route are wooded shores, small coves and sailboats. A lock connecting it to the outer harbor keeps the lake independent of the ebb and flow of the tides. The Hooksmeer walk is 3.88 kilometers long and classified as an easy hiking route. This makes it possible to assess the route both by its length and by its stated level of difficulty.
Routes through the town and region
Along the route, the Hooksiel Anchor Trail displays historic anchors of various sizes and origins. It passes through the historic town center and by restored buildings, small galleries and cafés. Maritime objects and the townscape are part of the same route theme: the anchors refer to shipping, while the route also draws attention to buildings and places in the historic center.
The Wangerland Pilgrimage Route offers a different perspective. This culturally rich cycling route passes Hooksiel along well-marked paths. Along the way, you can see 14 churches, including twelve Protestant and two Catholic churches. This gives the pilgrimage route a clear religious element alongside its cultural and historical focus. The pilgrimage route passes Hooksiel as a cycling route, while the Anchor Trail runs through the historic town center.
Old Harbor and maritime heritage
The Old Harbor in Hooksiel is a protected historic site. It is home to an old customs house, a warehouse and one of the last functioning sluice systems. Typical maritime objects can be seen in the harbor basin: sea buoys, a pilot tower and a mud boat. These examples include both buildings and a sluice system, as well as maritime objects in the harbor basin, providing several specific points of interest at the historic harbor.
Art and shells
The Hooksiel Artists’ House dedicates its exhibition and events program to presenting contemporary art. Exhibitions change from time to time; if the program is relevant to your trip, it is a good idea to check the latest dates.
The Hooksiel Shell Museum displays the smallest and largest shells and snails, as well as specimens from the North Sea and shells and snails from around the world. The collection thus offers both a comparison of sizes and a range of geographic origins. The museum is accessible and wheelchair-accessible. Tours are available on request.
