Discover Wangerland
Accommodation in Wangerland
Wangerland offers several different starting points when choosing where to stay: the North Sea beach in Horumersiel, paths and nature around the Wangermeer in Hohenkirchen, and cultural and water sports activities in Hooksiel. If you are looking for a hotel in Wangerland, you can first consider whether you would rather spend your holiday at the beach, by the lake, cycling, or enjoying culture and water sports. The different destinations provide concrete guidance.
Green beach and nature at the Wangermeer
The beach in Horumersiel is a green beach with soft grass right by the North Sea. This makes it an alternative to a sandy beach. If you take the beach surface into account when choosing excursions, you will find a clear difference from a classic sandy beach here.
At the Wangermeer in Hohenkirchen, various hiking trails lead to extensive tours with varied views of the lake’s natural surroundings. A large, round island lies in the middle of the lake. It can be reached on foot and by bicycle via a 325-metre-long promenade bridge. This makes it possible to combine a walk by the lake with a detour to the island.
The Wangermeer is also a habitat for many bird species, including rare ones, and for a wide variety of fish. Nature and trails go hand in hand here: the lake is a destination for excursions and, at the same time, a habitat that shapes the surrounding area.
Exhibitions and local landmarks
The Wangerland National Park Centre in Minsen offers around 250 square metres of exhibition space, with multimedia opportunities to actively experience and discover the Wadden Sea. Renewable energy and climate protection are also covered in the exhibition. The centre offers guided tours and microscopy courses about the Wadden Sea. Check the latest visitor information and programme before your visit.
In Hooksiel, the Shell Museum displays exhibits ranging from tiny snails to shells larger than the palm of your hand. Another expression of local identity is Karin Mennen’s bronze sculpture “Seewiefken”. It stands in Norderaltendeich near Minsen-Förrien, is considered a landmark of Wangerland, and also features on the municipal coat of arms.
Water sports and cycling routes
The inland lakes Wangermeer and Hooksmeer offer water sports that are independent of the tides. Specific activities and operating arrangements may vary by season. The Hooksieler Binnentief, also known as Hooksmeer, covers around 60 hectares and is suitable for sailing and stand-up paddling.
The Hooksiel ski terraces offer water skiing and wakeboarding. Experienced instructors provide an introduction in the morning; afterwards, equipment in various sizes is available at the lift. Check with the operator which dates and activities are currently available. The consistent North Sea breeze and offshore sandbanks are said to create good conditions for kitesurfing and windsurfing in Wangerland. Actual conditions depend on the wind and local operating arrangements.
For cycling tours, the junction-based map lets you plan your own route: it covers more than 200 kilometres of flat paths through Wangerland. As route information can change, check the latest map before setting out. Cycling is another way to incorporate different excursion interests into your own daily plans.
Walks and events in Horumersiel
The Horumersiel spa gardens, with their adjoining bandstand, are suitable for walks, open-air concerts and other events such as small fairs or markets. Events and their dates may vary, so check specific dates in advance. This lets you include the spa gardens as a programme item without assuming that a particular event is taking place.
Whether you want to focus on a green beach, lakeside paths, a museum or water sports, the places mentioned offer different ways to spend your time in Wangerland. For your stay, you can arrange the destinations according to your interests and check the latest information on seasonal activities, routes and events in advance.
