Amelinghausen between Lopausee Lake and the heath
Accommodation in Amelinghausen
Amelinghausen offers a range of options for planning your trip: activities at Lopausee Lake, trails associated with the heath and historic sites. If you are looking for a hotel in Amelinghausen, you can start by considering what you would like to focus on during your stay. The following destinations and trails have different focuses—from an outdoor swimming pool to an archaeological site nearby.
Water and activities
At Lopausee Lake, you can go pedal boating and fishing; swimming is not permitted there. Waldbad Amelinghausen offers another option for swimming: the outdoor pool has a 50-metre lane and a sunbathing lawn. It is open seasonally, so it is advisable to check the opening hours for your travel dates before visiting. There is also a small barefoot trail at Lopausee Lake. If pedal boating is part of your plans, check in advance whether it will be available on your chosen date.
Heath blossom festival and trails
Kronsbergheide, a small heathland area, is right beside the B209 at the entrance to Amelinghausen when you arrive from the direction of Lüneburg. It is the venue for the annual Heath Blossom Festival, where the Heath Queen is crowned. The Heath Queen of Amelinghausen has been officially elected at Kronsbergheide since 1950. If you are planning your trip around the festival, check the dates for the year you intend to travel.
The 11-kilometre Königinnen-Weg (Queens’ Trail) is a circular route that connects the countryside around Amelinghausen with the tradition of the Heath Blossom Festival. It therefore has a different focus from the historic town walk: here, the emphasis is on the connection between the landscape and the festival tradition, while the town walk leads to historic sites in the town.
Historic sites and landscapes
Hippolit Church is a historic fieldstone building and is considered a landmark of Amelinghausen. The historic town walk starts at the Amelinghausen Tourist Information Centre and passes more than 20 historic sites during the warmer months. These include Hippolit Church and the former tithe barn. This way, you can combine a walk through the town with visits to individual historic buildings.
Nearby, in the heathland around Amelinghausen, lies the Oldendorfer Totenstatt, a well-known archaeological site in the Lüneburg Heath. In the municipality of Oldendorf (Luhe), a one-kilometre circular trail also leads through Marxener Paradies. It runs along a slope covered with heath and juniper, past an area of heathland and a meadow in colourful bloom with a pond in the moorland. On the other side of the valley, it leads into a fairytale forest with multi-stemmed beech trees.
