A circular hiking trail leads to Neolithic megalithic tombs, the water tower offers views over Lüneburg, and Scharnebeck is home to Germany’s largest ship lift of its kind. The destination of Lüneburg thus combines urban history, prehistoric remains, technology and routes through the landscape. To plan your trip, you can start by choosing a focus: a tour of the historic townscape, a destination with an archaeological history, a walk or a festival with a large parade.

Townscape, views and concerts in Lüneburg

Town and town hall tours showcase Lüneburg’s historic atmosphere: gabled brick houses, old lanes and the picturesque waterside quarter shape the impressions described. If you are particularly interested in the townscape, a guided tour brings these different elements together, from the façades to the lanes and the quarter by the water.

The Lüneburg water tower offers another perspective. Its viewing platform is 56 metres high and affords views across the town and its surroundings. The tower hosts classical concerts at 8 pm on the first Sunday of every month and every full moon. If a concert fits your travel plans, check the dates before you arrive. A guided tour, a view from above and a concert each offer a different focus, so you do not have to keep returning to the same part of town.

Glacial Erratics and Megalithic Tombs

In Breetze, a district of Bleckede, the boulder ring displays glacial erratics as evidence of the Ice Age formation of the Elbe Urstromtal. The site is freely accessible, and parking is available. Check access information before your visit. The stones make geological history a tangible focus for a visit, while the megalithic tombs in Schieringer Forest relate to a much earlier human history.

The megalithic tombs between Barskamp and Walmsburg were built during the Neolithic period, between 3000 and 2300 BC. A circular hiking trail starts at Walmsburg village square and leads to the tombs in Schieringer Forest. This lets you combine a hike with an archaeological destination. The boulder ring illustrates the Ice Age formation of the Elbe Urstromtal; the megalithic tombs date from the Neolithic period, between 3000 and 2300 BC.

Technology and climbing in Scharnebeck

The Lüneburg ship lift in Scharnebeck is the largest ship lift of its kind in Germany. As a point of interest in engineering, it complements the historic townscapes and prehistoric sites with another form of human construction. Scharnebeck Forest Ropes Course offers an active alternative: climbers move between platforms at heights of three to four metres, reaching up to 15 metres, and can also tackle a 435-metre zip-line course.

Trails and a festival in Amelinghausen

At Lopausee lake and Lopaupark, a 2.2-kilometre circular trail is available for jogging, walking and Nordic walking. The Königinnen-Weg is an 11-kilometre circular hiking trail around the heathland town of Amelinghausen. The distances provide a clear guide for planning: the loop at Lopausee and Lopaupark is much shorter than the Königinnen-Weg. You can use the stated distances to decide which route better suits your plans.

The Heideblütenfest takes place every August in the Amelinghausen collective municipality. The programme includes the crowning of the Heath Queen and a large festival parade. As the exact festival dates and programme may change, check them before travelling if you are planning your trip specifically around the festival.

Bus connection to Amelinghausen

One specific connection runs from Lüneburg’s main railway station on bus 5700 towards Soltau to Amelinghausen central bus station; the journey takes around 35 minutes. This is an approximate travel time for this connection. Check the current timetable before travelling to ensure your plans match your intended departure.
