Discover Weener: Old Town, Historic Harbor and Organ Culture
Accommodation in Weener
Get to know Weener through several distinct highlights: local history and musical instruments, the old town and harbor, as well as cycling and leisure activities. If you are looking for a hotel in Weener, you can plan your trip around whether you would rather visit collections, take guided walks or explore routes outdoors.
Museum and Historical Keyboard Instruments
The Weener Local History Museum is housed in a former poorhouse built in 1791. Its exhibits range from prehistoric finds to workshop equipment that was only decommissioned a few decades ago. The collection therefore includes both very early finds and evidence of comparatively recent working life.
The ORGANEUM is housed in a villa dating from 1870 and contains a significant collection of historical keyboard instruments. Three dozen playable exhibits include house organs, organ models, harpsichords, clavichords, fortepianos and harmoniums. The musical range spans from the Renaissance to the Late Romantic period.
From April to September, a guided tour of the collection is offered on Wednesdays at 3 p.m. If you would like to plan around this time, check the specific dates before your trip.
Old Town and Public Guided Tours
A walk through Weener’s old town takes you past St. George’s Church and the ORGANEUM, and on to the Old Harbor. The Kaakebogen arch near St. George’s Church marked the boundary between the ecclesiastical and secular areas and is the meeting point for public town tours.
From May to September, public guided tours of the old town are offered at 3 p.m. on the first Saturday of each month. They start at Kaake-Bogen, NorderstraĂźe 3. Check the dates before your trip.
Harbor Sites and Local History
The Old Harbor in Weener is a harbor for historic ships. The museum harbor is lined with buildings that are more than 100 years old. At the head of the harbor stands a bronze monument to the “Törfwieven” (peat women). It honors their hard work and recalls the lively harbor activity of times past.
Cycling Routes and Choosing a Route
The 56.1-kilometer “Vom Kampf und Kunst” (“From Conflict and Art”) circular cycling route leads from Weener via Stapelmoor into the Netherlands, then back to its starting point in Weener via Bad Nieuweschans and Bunde. Tour 9 is shorter, at 34.1 kilometers. It passes through districts of Weener, including Stapelmoor, Diele and Holthusen, and runs by the Dieler Schanzen. The stated distances and routes offer two specific points of reference when choosing a route. Check route conditions before setting off.
The North Sea Cycle Route is also connected to Weener: coming from the Netherlands, it reaches the Rheiderland here.
More Outdoor Activities
A little over five kilometers long, a circular route around the Meentelande runs in the area surrounding the town of Weener and is suitable for running and hiking. The Weener mini-golf course occupies a 3,000-square-meter site and also offers table tennis and badminton. Check the facility’s current operating status before your visit.
Friesenbad Weener has 1,200 square meters of water area and a large water slide; it is a seasonal swimming facility. Check the current season dates before your trip. Friesenbad also has a beach volleyball court, which is freely accessible to its guests.
