In Holtland, architectural history and the Watten Route offer distinct travel interests. St. Mary’s Church dates back to the 13th century, Holtland Mill was built in the 19th century, and the third stage of the Watten Route from Leer to Hesel passes through the village. The church and mill offer a chance to explore different historical building periods; along the route, artworks are also among the specific points of interest. This lets you choose what to focus on in Holtland based on what interests you most.

The architectural history of St. Mary’s Church

St. Mary’s Church is the oldest surviving church in the Hesel joint municipality and dates from the 13th century. A freestanding bell tower of the parallel-wall type dates from the time the church was built. The original apse was replaced before 1500 by a late Gothic polygonal choir. During a renovation in 1787, the windows were enlarged and a wooden ceiling was installed in place of the vault. This sequence of events divides the building’s history into several clearly distinct phases: its medieval origins, the later choir design and the alterations made in the 18th century.

The furnishings also offer specific points of interest. St. Mary’s Church contains a Romanesque baptismal font made of Bentheim sandstone. The largely preserved organ was built by Johann Gottfried Rohlfs between 1810 and 1813. The font and organ represent different periods and materials; together with the changes to the choir, windows and ceiling, they give a more detailed picture than the age of the church building alone. These differences are a useful starting point for anyone interested in architecture and historic furnishings.

Holtland Mill and the mill café

The three-storey Holtland Mill is a Dutch gallery mill built between 1862 and 1864. It is considered a landmark of the municipality of Holtland. The mill is once again fully operational. If you are planning to attend a mill demonstration, check on site beforehand whether the current operating conditions are suitable.

A café is housed in the mill’s former engine house. From May to September, various associations invite visitors to the mill café on Sundays for tea, coffee and cake. The offering is therefore seasonal and limited to Sundays. Check the latest opening and event details before travelling so you don’t plan on visiting when it is not open.

The Watten Route through Holtland

The third stage of the Watten Route from Leer to Hesel runs through Holtland. The route passes through a flat, expansive landscape. The section also features two artworks: beyond the Holtlander Nücke, the sculpture “Stone Axe” is located between Vorwerker Straße and Wassergarten. The sculpture “She Who Dances with the Wind” is on Kleinbahnstraße in Holtland. The route thus combines a description of the landscape with specific art stops that can be distinguished by their names and locations.

If you are planning to walk this section, check the latest route information before setting out, as the route may change. You should also check the locations of the artworks on site if route conditions have changed. The waypoints listed here help you identify the Holtland section without reducing the entire route to the parts within the village.

A cultural highlight in the destination of Leer

In the wider destination of Leer, the town of Leer offers its own cultural and historical attraction: Evenburg Castle. The castle is a cultural heritage site of regional importance and consists of the castle, park and outer bailey. Since May 2014, it has been open to visitors with a permanent exhibition on the life and business of an aristocratic family in the 19th century, and it is also a centre for garden culture. These themes belong to Leer and complement Holtland’s local attractions without conflating the two places.
