Discover Uelsen
Accommodation in Uelsen
Uelsen combines cultural and historical sites with walking routes through the municipality and leisure activities in the Uelsen holiday area. This lets you choose different focuses for your stay: exploring the History Park independently, admiring the architecture of individual buildings or spending time at the woodland swimming pool. The landscape also offers a variety of views—from the town centre to gently rolling hills.
Cultural History in Uelsen
The Uelser Quellen History Park (GUQ) is a signposted cultural and historical circular trail connecting sites of historical significance. You can explore it independently all year round. Its circular route and the way it links several sites make the GUQ a destination in its own right for anyone wishing to discover Uelsen’s history on foot.
The Uelser Windmill is a ground-level Dutch windmill with a tailpole and sail-shaped blades. These components are characteristic features of this type of mill. The mill has been restored as a technical monument: work began in 1956 and was completed in 2000. This building thus brings together its classification as a technical monument, its characteristic components and a clearly dated restoration period.
The Evangelical Reformed Church is considered Uelsen’s oldest building. Different architectural styles can be distinguished in the church: the lower part of the tower is Romanesque, while the nave and west portal are Gothic. Anyone interested in architectural history can find two specific architectural classifications in one building.
The Old Town Hall is generally dated to 1649. It houses a small exhibition featuring prehistoric finds and a copy of the Golden Beaker. Exhibitions and chamber concerts are also held there. A visit therefore combines a historical date with a close-up look at artefacts and cultural events beyond the permanent exhibition.
Routes and Landscape
The Rund um Uelsen route follows very well-maintained paths through the town centre and the northern and southern outskirts of the municipality. From Bookesch, the route offers views towards the town centre and Uelser Holt. Uelser Holt is a particularly attractive stretch, with gently rolling hills and shelters where you can rest. When finding your way along the route, both its passage through different parts of the municipality and these varied landscape views are worth noting.
Wider Landscape Setting: Grafschaft Bentheim
Across the wider travel destination of Grafschaft Bentheim, heathland, raised and lowland bogs, wooded ridges and the Vechte river valley alternate. The Itterbecker Heide, a nature reserve covering around 85 hectares, is located there. It is one of the largest contiguous sandy heathland areas in southwestern Lower Saxony; dunes and push moraines shape its landscape. These details refer to Grafschaft Bentheim and the Itterbecker Heide, not to Uelsen itself.
Woodland Swimming Pool and Leisure
The Uelsen woodland swimming pool combines an indoor pool and an outdoor pool in the Uelsen holiday area. The indoor pool features a 75-metre winding slide and an area for small children. You can distinguish between the indoor and outdoor pools while also seeing which special features belong to the indoor pool.
The mini-golf course is right next to the woodland swimming pool and has several holes. This brings two different leisure activities together in one area: swimming at the pool and mini-golf. If you are planning your stay around the interests of your travel group, you can consider these activities as separate options without conflating them with the cultural and historical sites or walking routes.
Getting There: Regional Context
At the level of the Samtgemeinde Uelsen, connections are available via federal, state and district roads, as well as the Fietsenbus, a bus that carries bicycles. This provides a regional point of reference for your planning. If you plan to use the Fietsenbus, check the timetable before setting off.
