Location: Watermill, Historic Buildings and Lager Busch
Accommodation in Location
If you are planning a hotel stay in Lage, you can get to know the town through specific historical and landscape landmarks. The old watermill is the centrepiece of the historic village centre; the church and manor house add to the architectural history, while Lager Busch is a woodland and meadow landscape on the edge of the Dinkel. When planning your trip, it is worth distinguishing between historical significance and public access: the manor house is not open to the public, and the mill is demonstrated in operation only on selected days.
Lage Watermill and Its Two Waterwheels
Lage Watermill was built around 1270 as a grain and oil mill. It has two waterwheels: one was used to produce flour, the other to produce vegetable oil. This division of tasks illustrates its dual purpose: the mill combined grain processing with vegetable oil production. The mill can be seen in operation on selected days; dates may vary depending on the season and local schedule. Check the date before your trip if you would like to see the mill running.
Church, Manor House and Former Castle
The Evangelical Reformed Church of Lage was built between 1687 and 1688. It is a brick hall church; the sandstone door and window frames provide a contrast to the brick. The manor house dates from 1686 and has Dutch architectural character. Its date therefore immediately precedes the church’s construction period. The manor house is not open to the public. Bear this restriction in mind when planning your visit and check access information locally before travelling.
The former castle is also part of Lage’s history. Until the Eighty Years’ War, it was an important bastion. After the count withdrew, it was destroyed by Dutch troops. This sets the castle apart from the other historic buildings: it should be understood as a destroyed former site, not as a present-day building.
Dinkel Connections in Lage
Lager Busch is a woodland and meadow landscape on the edge of the Dinkel. Lage Watermill stands on the river’s former course. The Dinkel thus features in two different contexts: Lager Busch as a landscape on the river’s edge, and the mill in relation to a former river course. The distinction in time between the landscape and the mill’s historic location is useful to bear in mind.
The County of Bentheim as a Regional Setting
Across the wider County of Bentheim destination, heathland, raised and lowland bogs, wooded ridges and the Vechte River valley alternate. Kunstwegen is also part of this regional setting: this open-air museum of contemporary art, nature and history extends for more than 180 kilometres through the Vechte Valley. More than 80 sculpture projects are located along the route; the collection may change.
Another regional option is the Grafschafter Fietsentour. Its main route is about 220 kilometres long and passes through all the municipalities in the district. Route details may change; check them before planning a cycling trip. Tourist overnight guests in the County of Bentheim can use buses and trains throughout the district free of charge with the Grafschafter Gästekarte. Check the current terms and conditions before your trip.
