Steinhorst lies along the Lachte between the Südheide and Drömling nature parks. A stay here can combine natural surroundings with local history: alongside its location by the river and parks, the school museum and historic buildings are central attractions. If you are looking for a destination with a clear cultural and historical focus, Steinhorst offers tangible points of interest—from the fortified church to the exhibition on the development of the school system.

Landscape and Location

Steinhorst lies on the Lachte and between the Südheide and Drömling nature parks. The “Obere Lachte, Kainbach, Jafelbach” nature reserve lies between Groß Oesingen and Steinhorst. This brings together different geographical perspectives: Steinhorst is defined by its location along the river and between the nature parks, while the protected area lies between the two towns. This landscape provides a setting for the town’s historical attractions.

Historic Buildings in Steinhorst

St. George’s fortified church was probably built around 1235. The old school building next to the church was built in 1737. The former village forge tells another story of the past: the building, dating from 1822, now houses the museum library. These construction dates reveal a sequence spanning several centuries—from the probably early church building through school and village history to the forge’s current use as a library.

The present-day community hall adds another period to this historical perspective. It was built between 1905 and 1910 as a training center for Zionist farmers; Heinrich Tessenow was the building’s architect. Together with the older structures, it gives Steinhorst another clearly distinct chapter in its history: an early 20th-century building with a specifically named original function.

School Museum and Exhibitions

The school museum is housed in a carefully restored half-timbered farmhouse dating from the late 17th or early 18th century. Its permanent exhibition documents the development of the school system from antiquity to the present day. During your visit, a historic building thus provides the setting for an exhibition spanning a period far beyond the house’s own origins. At the museum, you can also see a historic classroom and a special exhibition; the topic of the special exhibition may change.

The permanent exhibition offers a broad overview across time. The Erich Weniger House is used for special exhibitions, events, and talks. The school museum thus combines the presentation of school history with other exhibition and event formats, without requiring every visitor experience to cover the same period or take the same form.

Exploring Steinhorst on Foot

The Historic School Route offers a walking experience through Steinhorst and complements a museum visit with a stroll through the town. It provides another way to explore the theme of school history. Before your visit, check whether the Historic School Route is still available, in case the museum’s visitor program has changed.

Steinhorst in the Wider Gifhorn Destination

The wider Gifhorn destination includes heathland, forests, moorland, rivers, and lakes across the district. The Drömling, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, is also located there. The district-wide cycling network comprises around 700 kilometers of recreational cycle routes, plus around 550 kilometers of everyday cycling routes with connecting paths. Around 400 signposted junctions can be combined to plan individual routes. These are two distinct scales: in Steinhorst, the school museum, historic buildings, and school route are the local focus; information about landscapes and cycle routes refers to the wider Gifhorn district.
