Calberlah: Hotels and the Old Chapel
Accommodation in Calberlah
The Old Chapel is a historic landmark in Calberlah. Cycling and countryside experiences can be considered in the broader context of the Isenbüttel collective municipality and the wider Gifhorn destination. The town’s history and regional activities therefore offer different focuses for planning your trip.
The Old Chapel: Building History and Features
The Old Chapel is classified as a listed monument in Lower Saxony. Its first mention under IsenbĂĽttel dates back to 1534. A sandstone block bearing the year 1576 is set into the west gable, which is built using oak timber framing. The dates and visible architectural feature give the chapel a tangible historical context.
Its features include a late Gothic wooden two-winged altarpiece and a positive organ from the 17th century. The organ is considered one of the oldest and most valuable in Gifhorn District. The Old Chapel is also described as a place to pause and reflect. It is not open to the public outside of services.
The Railway Station and Local History
The railway station is also part of the town’s earlier history: it was already in operation in 1904. Another way of exploring Calberlah’s history was a cycling tour focused on local history, which was part of an anniversary program in 2024. The former brickworks was also mentioned in this context.
Cycling and Countryside Experiences in the Wider Gifhorn Destination
Gifhorn District encompasses heathland, forests, moorland, rivers, and lakes. The district is also home to the Drömling, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.
For cycling, the district offers a network of around 700 kilometers of leisure cycling routes, plus around 550 kilometers of everyday cycling routes, including connecting routes. Around 400 signposted nodes can be combined to plan individual cycling routes. The Südheide “Cycling” leaflet lists 14 signposted tours. GPX tracks and further information can be downloaded via a QR code. Route conditions, leaflets, and route data may change; check the current version and conditions along the route before setting off. In Gifhorn District, the Great Moor Railway adds to the nature offerings: covered carriages adapted for passenger transport travel into the Great Moor, in the municipality of Sassenburg, at six kilometers per hour. Services are seasonal and weather-dependent.
The IsenbĂĽttel collective municipality also offers regional nature and outdoor activity highlights: extensive areas of woodland, heathland, and meadows provide opportunities for hiking, cycling, and horseback riding. The collective municipality is home to Tankumsee, a 62-hectare lake with a 1,000-meter-long white sandy beach. Swimming, sailing, surfing, and fishing are possible activities there. The Ornithological Walking Trail also runs around Tankumsee. Information boards along the trail introduce visitors to the birdlife at Tankumsee.
This lets you tailor the destination to your own travel plans.
