Culture in Bockhorn
St. Cosmas and Damian Church in Bockhorn is a typical Frisian church. It was built around 1200 from glacial erratics on an artificially constructed dwelling mound. The building material and the site can be clearly distinguished: glacial erratics refer to the construction material, while the mound is the artificially created foundation. Sunday and feast-day services, as well as concerts, are held in the church; check the current dates in advance.
Another historical point of reference is organ building: in 1720, the parish commissioned the organ builder Christian Vater to build an organ for Bockhorn church. Vater was a pupil of Arp Schnittger from the Wesermarsch region. This connects the church’s history with a specific commission from the early 18th century.
The Hemkensche Kaufmannshaus, also known as Haus JĂĽrgens, stands on the market square in Bockhorn. The house dates from the mid-18th century; a door on its south side dates from 1754. The distinction is useful when dating the building: the house as a whole is dated to the middle of the century, while the door has a more precise date.
