More than 200 kilometres of cycling routes run through Wangerland, between the North Sea coast and the inland region. The network is part of the international North Sea Cycle Route system. This means cycling is connected both to Wangerland and to the wider regional North Sea Cycle Route system. With the junction map, you can plan your own tours across the network of flat routes. As route information can change, it’s worth checking the latest map before setting off.

Mederns on a cycling tour

Mederns features on more than just the Schillig–Hooksiel circular tour: the route passes through Mederns, and the village is also the destination of a cycling trip from Hohenkirchen. These are two distinct options for planning a tour: a circular route through the village and a ride with Mederns as the destination. The cemetery in Mederns is located on a terp. The village is one of the small settlements with typical Frisian charm. The cemetery’s location on a terp and the village’s distinctively Frisian character give Mederns its own appeal alongside the route-planning options.

Culture and coastal landscapes in Wangerland

In addition to cycling, Wangerland offers a variety of landscapes and cultural attractions. Horumersiel has a grassy beach with soft lawn right by the North Sea, offering an alternative to a sandy beach. In Hooksiel, the Shell Museum displays exhibits ranging from tiny snails to shells larger than a hand. The bronze sculpture “Seewiefken” by Karin Mennen stands in Norderaltendeich, near Minsen-Förrien. A landmark of Wangerland, it also adorns the municipal coat of arms. At the Wangerland National Park House in Minsen, the exhibition uses around 250 square metres of exhibition space to offer multimedia ways to actively experience and discover the Wadden Sea. Renewable energy and climate protection are also among the exhibition topics. Check the house’s latest visitor information before your visit.

Wangermeer: trails, nature and water sports

At Wangermeer, outdoor activities and nature come together: trails by the lake invite you to take long walks and enjoy varied views of nature. A large, round island lies in the middle of the lake; you can reach it on foot or by bicycle via a 325-metre-long promenade bridge. For planning an outing, the options include hiking trails around Wangermeer, access to the island on foot or by bike, and water sports on Wangermeer and Hooksmeer. Water sports here are not dependent on the tides; specific activities and arrangements may vary by season. There are also several ways to enjoy wildlife: while cycling, you may spot salt marshes, wading birds and, with a little luck, small crabs; many bird species, including rare ones, have settled at Wangermeer, and the lake provides a habitat for a wide variety of fish.
