Syke offers two clear themes to consider when planning a stay: cultural history exhibitions and routes through woodland and Geest landscapes. The Kreismuseum Syke and the Forum Gesseler Goldhort focus on different historical periods; there is also changing art at Syker Vorwerk and outdoor sites devoted to specific themes.

Kreismuseum and Forum Gesseler Goldhort

In the district of Diepholz, the Kreismuseum Syke, together with the Forum Gesseler Goldhort, is the museum of cultural and everyday history. The Kreismuseum presents everyday life from the Stone Age to the threshold of the present day, while also preserving the region’s cultural heritage from the past 300 years. This brings a broad perspective on everyday history together with a dedicated archaeological focus.

At the Forum Gesseler Goldhort, the exhibition spans the Stone Age to the Middle Ages. The Gessel gold hoard comprises 117 gold objects from the 14th century BC. In the hands-on lab, visitors can try out archaeological research methods for themselves at six lab tables. The hands-on activities may change with the museum programme; if you are interested, check in advance what is planned for your visit.

Art at Syker Vorwerk

Syker Vorwerk presents four to six changing solo or group exhibitions each year. The garden features both temporary and permanent sculptures and works of art. This offers two distinct ways to engage with art: an exhibition programme that changes, and works of art in the open air. The grounds can be visited independently of opening hours. As exhibitions, individual works and arrangements for the outdoor area may change, check the current programme and visitor information before planning a specific visit.

Hiking trails, woodland and the Geest

The Hachepadd starts at the Kreismuseum, follows the Hache and continues through the Hache valley. The Goldhortweg starts at the Kreismuseum and the Forum Gesseler Goldhort. It crosses the hilly Geest near the original discovery site of the gold hoard. The descriptions highlight different landscapes: the Hache and Hache valley are the focus of the Hachepadd, while the Goldhortweg highlights the Geest and the discovery site.

Syke’s Wolfsschlucht is a natural amphitheatre in the forest. Children’s and cultural events are often held there during the summer months. If you would like to plan your visit around an event, check the latest dates. The Wald-Weg-Zeichen-Kunstpfad offers a different artistic way to experience the forest: wooden objects and elements shape it into an artistic space. From the Hoher Berg, you can look across the Geest towards Bremen.

For a cycling trip, there is the Syker Radrundweg, a circular route of more than 40 kilometres through Syke’s districts. In addition to the hiking trails described above, you can choose from a longer cycling route and various landscape and art themes. Choose according to the focus you want for your stay, rather than treating the different places as one continuous programme.

Getting there and practical information

Bus routes 102 and 153 run from Syke station to the Kreismuseum. As routes and timetables can change, check your connection before travelling. The Forum Gesseler Goldhort is wheelchair accessible via the main entrance; there are two accessible parking spaces there. Check the latest accessibility and parking information again before your arrival. The Forum has a self-service café for a coffee break. Its availability may also change, so it is worth enquiring in advance.

When choosing your stay, you can consider the cultural programme, routes and practical information separately: the museum offers a historical focus, Syker Vorwerk combines changing exhibitions with art in the garden, and the routes differ in the landscapes and themes described. Check timetables, event dates and visitor services that may change according to your plans.
