Freistatt: Moorland, Field Railway and History
Accommodation in Freistatt
Freistatt combines a moorland landscape with a historic railway line and places where the history of youth welfare can be seen. These themes offer different ways to shape a trip to Freistatt: you can explore habitats and birdlife, plan a visit to the planet trail and field railway, or visit the memorial. This lets you tailor your stay to the interests that bring you to Freistatt.
Moorland and Birdlife
The protected moorland area includes the historic sections of Nördliches Wietingsmoor, Freistätter Moor, Mittleres Wietingsmoor and Sprekelsmeer. Restored sections contain open water, cotton-grass lawns rich in peat moss and moorland heath. At the same time, much of Freistätter Moor is characterized by extensive agricultural grassland use. The habitats described and the grassland areas illustrate different aspects of the landscape.
The protected area is important to birds as a breeding and stopover site. Cranes use the grassland areas to forage and as resting areas; some bodies of water serve as roosting sites while they rest. Those interested in nature and birdlife will find more than a general moorland landscape here: there are also specific details about the importance of different areas to the animals.
Planet Trail and Field Railway
The 3.3-kilometre planet trail runs alongside the field railway line between Freistatt and Heimstatt and features information panels. Its length provides a clear framework for planning your outing, while the panels add a distinct theme to the route. By following the railway line, the trail connects two of Freistatt’s main visitor attractions without making the planet trail itself a railway line.
The Freistatt field railway takes groups of visitors into the moor, and visitors ride along the historic railway line. The current route follows the historic track along the old moor embankment between Freistatt and Heimstatt. The field railway thus combines the visitor ride with the route of the former line. If you plan to take a ride, check the latest dates in advance, as operating hours and frequency may change.
The Old Bakehouse is also part of the Freistatt visitor area.
History, Memorial and Other Places
Haus Moorhort houses a public memorial to the history of youth welfare in Freistatt. Information panels, historical documents, photographs and exhibits provide concrete points of reference for the historical account. The history of youth welfare in Freistatt began in 1899, making the memorial a different focus from the moorland and field railway.
Another historical reference point is the development up to 1911: by then, four houses could accommodate around 250 boys aged 14 to 21. This figure illustrates the scale of youth welfare in Freistatt at the time.
Freistatt’s sensory garden offers a different way to experience a place of interest. The varied, park-like grounds are designed to stimulate hearing, sight, smell and touch. Here, sensory impressions take center stage, while the memorial explores historical themes.
The Moor Church is another local landmark: regular church services are held there, and the community rooms are used for events. If you plan your trip around a specific date, check the latest information about services and events.
