Sahlenburg between mudflats, coastal heath and Wernerwald Forest
Accommodation in Sahlenburg
Sahlenburg combines sandy beaches, dunes, coastal heath and forest with the Wadden Sea. There are also hiking trails through Wernerwald Forest, nature tours and ways to reach Neuwerk. The landscape and range of activities offer a guide to planning your stay around your own interests.
Sahlenburg’s landscape: beach, heath and Geest cliff
The terrain was shaped during the Ice Age. In Sahlenburg, dune landscapes with coastal heath slope down to the salt marsh and, from there, to the Wadden Sea—sometimes gently, sometimes steeply as a Geest cliff. The term “Geest cliff” draws attention to this change in terrain, where the slope varies in steepness. Sandy beaches, dunes, heath and forest together shape the coastal landscape. Sahlenburg therefore offers more than just a beach: the transitions between heath, salt marsh and mudflats are also part of the local scenery.
Wadden Sea Visitor Centre and nature
The Cuxhaven Wadden Sea Visitor Centre is located right on Sahlenburg Beach, between the heath and the mudflats. Its exhibition spans three floors and covers the Wadden Sea World Heritage Site and the coastal heaths of Cuxhaven. Nature tours at the visitor centre let you experience the mudflats, salt marsh, Geest cliff and coastal heath. The exhibition and tours each have a different focus: the former centres on the Wadden Sea and coastal heaths, while the latter focus on the landscape itself.
Cuxhaven Climbing Park is also located right on Sahlenburg Beach, at Wernerwaldstraße 2. It has seven courses and 72 challenges. This provides a clearly defined climbing activity alongside the nature-based offerings. Sahlenburg is also Cuxhaven’s largest area for surfing and kitesurfing.
Hiking trails and routes to Neuwerk
From Sahlenburg, you can reach hiking trails through the coastal heaths via Wernerwald Forest. Horse-riding trails lead through the coastal heath and Wernerwald Forest into the Wadden Sea in the direction of Neuwerk. Sahlenburg is also a starting point for mudflat hikes to Neuwerk. These routes and activities take you through different parts of the landscape, so when planning you can first decide whether you would like to travel on foot, along horse-riding trails or on a mudflat hike.
Another option is to travel by traditional mudflat carriage. From Cuxhaven-Sahlenburg, Neuwerk can be reached this way depending on the tide; the crossing across the mudflats or over the water generally runs once a day. Check the current timetable when planning your trip. A mudflat hike and a mudflat carriage ride are different ways of reaching the island and should not be regarded as the same connection.
Getting to the visitor centre
From Cuxhaven train station, take bus route 1002 towards “Sahlenburg Am Strand” to reach the Wadden Sea Visitor Centre. From Duhnen, route 1009 also runs towards “Sahlenburg Am Strand.” The Duhnen–Sahlenburg dune train also operates as a tourist attraction. Check the current timetable for your chosen connection before setting off.
Cuxhaven as a wider setting
As part of the wider Cuxhaven destination, the Wadden Sea belongs to the Lower Saxony Wadden Sea National Park and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2009. At low tide, the mudflats near Cuxhaven provide a habitat for more than 10,000 animal and plant species. This information places Sahlenburg within the wider natural area of Cuxhaven.
When travelling to Neuwerk, it is also helpful to distinguish between the departure points: mudflat hikes begin in Sahlenburg, and the mudflat carriage connection is available from there. Ships from Alte Liebe in Cuxhaven travel towards Neuwerk, Heligoland and the seal banks. This makes it possible to distinguish Sahlenburg’s routes on foot or by mudflat carriage from the boat connections at Alte Liebe.
If you are looking for hotels in Sahlenburg, first decide what matters most to you: the beach and mudflats, trails through the heath and Wernerwald Forest, or a trip to Neuwerk. Then compare specific offers based on their stated location and amenities.
