Hagen im Bremischen offers a range of cultural and natural highlights to help you plan your trip. Forests, moors, heathland and marshes shape the landscape, which is crisscrossed by numerous cycling and hiking trails linking its 16 villages. Hagen Castle, the Hagener Königsmoor and the Schatzgrube Weißenberg nature experience landscape each offer something different. You can plan your stay around history and events, or focus on trails and moorland.

History and culture at Hagen Castle

Hagen Castle is a historically significant architectural monument. Its distinctive features include unusual grisaille paintings. Grisaille is a painting technique that uses shades of grey. More than 800 years ago, the Bishops of Bremen chose Hagen Castle as their summer residence. Today, the castle hosts changing exhibitions and cultural events. The Friends of Hagen Castle association organises concerts, readings, open-air events and children's theatre. The exhibition and event programme changes, so check the dates in advance if you are planning a specific visit. The castle is accessible to visitors with reduced mobility and has an outdoor lift as well as indoor lifts. Prior arrangements may be required to use the access facilities.

Hagener Königsmoor: Circular trail and guided tours

The core area of the Hagener Königsmoor covers around 90 hectares; it was rewetted in 1999. The circular trail features information boards about the flora and fauna. Allow around 1.5 to 2 hours of walking time for the loop. You can start your walk at Hagen Castle or at Möhlenstroot. This walking time is a guide for the loop; guided tours, on the other hand, are available on request. Groups of ten or more must register in advance.

Weißenberg and the Lower Weser region

At just under 24 hectares, and with an observation platform overlooking the grounds, the Schatzgrube Weißenberg nature experience landscape offers a different experience from the Königsmoor circular trail, with its boards on flora and fauna. Nearby, in the Lower Weser region, Sandstedt and Rechtenfleth offer marinas, dikes, campsites and natural swimming beaches.
