For a trip to Rosenthal, it is easy to plan around specific places and routes: hiking options range from a 2.6-kilometer circular trail to longer trails focused on nature or boundary stones. There is also the Protestant church near the market square and the small school museum in the Old School. This mix helps you decide what to focus on during your stay before looking for a hotel.

Hiking, Roses and Landscapes

Rosenthal is home to the Franzosenwiesentour, a 19.2-kilometer premium hiking trail in the low mountain range. Its hiking certification is valid until May 2028. The route passes through forest meadows and bogs, and along streams. The Franzosenwiesen is a nature reserve with numerous endangered plant and animal species. The route starts at the SeegerteichhĂĽtte near Rosenthal. The Rodaer StraĂźe bus stop in Rosenthal is listed as 500 meters away; there is a parking lot at the hut.

The Wildrosenweg offers a different focus: this 2.6-kilometer circular trail is mostly paved and suitable for a walk for all ages in any season. Around 60 different varieties of roses can be seen along the Wildrosenweg, including around 40 wild rose varieties and their hybrids. The “Rosenmärchen” nature discovery area along the Wildrosenweg offers various places to play and rest. By comparison, the Wildrosenweg is much shorter than the Franzosenwiesentour and follows a circular route. The themes also differ: roses along the Wildrosenweg contrast with the forest meadows, bogs and streams along the Franzosenwiesentour.

Boundary Stones and Nature Observation

The Southeast Boundary Stone Trail runs from the “Dreiländerstein” at the southeastern tip of Rosenthal’s municipal forest along the municipal and district boundary to the Krimmelbachgrund in the “Merzhäuser Teiche” nature reserve. Over six kilometers, it takes visitors to other historic boundary stones and explores their history. The trail continues into the “Merzhäuser Teiche” nature reserve, which covers around 20 hectares. So far, 128 bird species have been observed there, including 57 breeding species.

The historic boundary stone trail in northeastern and southern Rosenthal is 14 kilometers long. The historic section accounts for 7.5 kilometers and follows a prehistoric ridgeway and the Rhine–Weser watershed. A continuous boundary stone hike is possible over just over 17 kilometers, from the “Böddeberg” above Willersdorf to the height of the “Alten Wetterweg” in Rosenthal’s municipal area. The trails therefore combine different distances with themes such as historic boundaries, a prehistoric ridgeway and the watershed.

Church and School History

The Protestant church in Rosenthal is near the market square. It is listed as a cultural monument in the monument register of the State of Hesse for historical, artistic and urban-planning reasons.

Since 2010, a small school museum has been housed in the left-hand classroom of the Old School in Rosenthal. It brings the history of the former school back to life. If you would like to visit the museum, please contact them in advance.
