Kleinern borders Kellerwald-Edersee National Park, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Lake Edersee is nearby and offers a setting for water-based leisure activities. This means two different aspects of nature are in focus when choosing a destination: the beech forest area and recreation by the water. For hiking and cycling tours, it is worth considering the various options around Kleinern based on the type of route and your preferred focus.

Hiking Trails and Cycling Tours from Kleinern

The Kellerwaldsteig trail can be accessed from Kleinern. The Urwaldsteig Edersee is close to the village; there are also themed hikes in the nearby national and nature parks. Another named option is the premium hiking route “Rund ums Dorf” (Around the Village), which is approximately 10 km long. This gives you a specific point of reference for planning your tour. Before setting out, check the route details and access conditions. Trail routes and seasonal guided hiking options may also change.

For a cycling tour, there is the Edersee Cycle Route. Hiking and cycling are two different ways to experience the landscape: you can plan around the respective routes and your preferred focus without treating the options as interchangeable.

Nature and Time Outdoors

The Spicke leisure complex in Kleinern includes a barefoot path, nature information boards, benches and loungers, picnic seating, and public toilets. If you plan to visit, it is best to check on site that the facilities are available and confirm what is provided. This will help you take into account which of the listed amenities are relevant to your visit.

The national park right next to the village and nearby Lake Edersee offer different experiences: the focus here is on the beech forest area, and there on water-based recreation. If you want to combine different activities, you can consider these separately when choosing your day’s destinations. It is a good idea to check the relevant route and seasonal offerings in advance, especially for trails and guided hikes.

The Ederauen-Erlebnis-Weg runs between Mehlen and Giflitz through a varied river landscape and is suitable for hiking and cycling.

The nature reserves in the wider Edertal destination include “Schwimmkaute” and “Krautwiese.” Both developed from former gravel extraction sites that became aquatic habitats.
