Hatzfeld (Eder) combines striking reminders of its history with landscapes and cultural themes. When planning a stay, its castle, half-timbered churches, historic woodland use and offerings related to the history of writing provide different points of interest. If you are looking for a hotel in Hatzfeld (Eder), these themes can help you get a sense of what your stay has to offer.

Castle and Half-Timbered Architecture on the Castle Hill

The ruins of medieval Hatzfeld Castle stand high above the Eder Valley. The spur castle was built in the 13th century and was the ancestral seat of the Lords of Hatzfeld, first mentioned in 1138. Halfway up the same castle hill stands St. John’s Town Church. The Counts of Hatzfeld built it in the style of a Gothic half-timbered church. Together, the castle and church show two different types of architecture: the hilltop spur castle and the half-timbered place of worship on the slope.

The Emmaus Chapel also combines present-day use with a recurring cultural offering: it serves as a cemetery chapel and hosts several concerts each year. In Hatzfeld-Lindenhof, the half-timbered church is considered Hesse’s smallest place of worship. Together with St. John’s, it offers another perspective on the town’s half-timbered architecture. The buildings are distinct: St. John’s stands halfway up the castle hill, while the other church is in Lindenhof.

Pollarded Woodland and Burggraben Information Centre

The panoramic trail passes through the pollarded woodland, an old cultural landscape. In the 19th century, the hornbeams on either side of the path were regularly cut back to the trunk. Those interested in the history of land use can also view the trail from this perspective: the description of the pollarded woodland focuses on how the trees were once managed. The landscape itself and its history of use are both central here.

At the lower end of the former castle moat, on the slope above Hatzfeld, is the Hatzfeld Burggraben Information Centre. It includes a hillside garden with tiered beds, an uncovered old dry-stone wall and an uncovered entrance to an old tunnel. There is also a resting place for hikers and walkers. The garden, wall, tunnel entrance and resting place each give the site a distinct character. Check current visiting arrangements before your visit.

The History of Writing at the Atelier

The Atelier for Calligraphy and Heraldry displays writing instruments, writing materials and texts from different centuries. They cover the history of writing over more than 2,000 years. If you would like to explore the subject in greater depth, you can plan a guided tour: one lasts about an hour and focuses on 2,000 years of writing history. There is also a tour of about an hour and a half, with a focus chosen individually from a range of centuries and topics. The two stated durations give you a specific guide for planning; check current visiting arrangements and tour availability before your visit.

A Section of the Eder

One described section of the Eder is 800 metres long: it runs from the inlet of the operating channel of the H & V company (Sonsenbach inlet) to the start of the Eder bridge. If you would like to fish there, check the operator’s current rules on eligibility and permits in advance.

Waldeck-Frankenberg as a Wider Travel Destination

The wider travel destination of Waldeck-Frankenberg also offers distinctive nature-related attractions. The ancient beech forests of Kellerwald-Edersee National Park have been a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site since 2011. The 66-kilometre Urwaldsteig Edersee can be hiked in eight stages or as part of a three-day ranger-led hike; in the latter option, each stage is around 22 kilometres. The two stated hiking options can therefore be distinguished by their number of stages and duration.
