Discover Bad Schwalbach
Accommodation in Bad Schwalbach
Bad Schwalbach can be explored through a range of themes: a ride on the Moor Railway, a signposted trail to fountains and mineral springs, a medicinal herb garden, and historic sites. If you are planning a hotel stay, these specific destinations can help guide your activities. The differences outlined below will help you decide whether you would rather focus on a ride, a circular trail, plants and nature, or the town’s spa and cultural history.
Moor Railway and Fountain Trail
The Moor Railway has once again been available for passenger transport as a tourist attraction in Bad Schwalbach since 2001. The approximately ten-minute ride begins at the “Moorbadehaus,” passes the “Golfhaus,” “Schwalbenbrunnen” and “Waldsee” stops, and ends at the “Moorgruben” station. Check the operator’s current operating days before your trip.
The Fountain Trail, by contrast, is a signposted circular walking route that takes in Bad Schwalbach’s major fountains. Its yellow markers pass the mineral springs in the spa district; red arrows point to the fountains in the town center. This gives you two different ways to get around: a ride with named stops, or a circular route that takes in fountains and mineral springs.
Medicinal Plants and Peat Pits
The Kneipp Medicinal Herb Garden is located in the Stahlbrunnental (Röthelbachtal) in Bad Schwalbach. Covering 200 m², it has twelve beds with more than 150 medicinal herbs. The garden offers a distinct focus on medicinal plants and their variety.
The peat pits behind the Waldsee have a different connection to the area: of the nine pits, two are accessible via approximately 60 meters of paths, with walkways made of Douglas fir providing access. Here, the paths and wooden walkways describe the areas that have been made accessible; in the garden, the beds and medicinal herb collection take center stage. The two destinations therefore differ not only in theme, but also in the specific features described on site.
Spa History and Historic Buildings
The Alleesaal was built in 1820/21 in the Neoclassical style as the “Hotel de la Promenade” by private hotelier Grebert. The Martin Luther Church is Bad Schwalbach’s oldest historic building; the year 1471 is inscribed above the choir entrance. These details provide different historical points of reference: the Alleesaal’s construction date, style and original name, and the church’s recorded date.
Another perspective is offered by the permanent exhibition at the Kur-Stadt-Apothekenmuseum, which is devoted to the spa and town history of Bad Schwalbach. Together, these sites offer different ways to explore the subject: Neoclassical architectural history, a historic building with a year inscribed on it, and an exhibition on spa and town history. This can help you factor your interests into your plans without reducing the different places to a single theme.
The Rheingau-Taunus District in a Wider Context
The broader destination of the Rheingau-Taunus District offers a distinct regional perspective on landscape and cultural heritage. The district is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Upper Middle Rhine Valley through the municipal areas of RĂĽdesheim am Rhein and Lorch. Its cultural landscape is shaped by steep river slopes, steep-slope and terraced vineyards, numerous castles, historic townscapes and the Rhine.
The Upper Germanic-Rhaetian Limes is also part of the regional context: it crosses the Rheingau-Taunus District for approximately 35 kilometers and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since July 2005. It runs for around 33 kilometers within the Rhein-Taunus Nature Park. The different length figures refer to different geographic areas.
The Rheingau-Taunus District also has 14 designated Riesling Loops. These 4- to 8-kilometer circular routes between Flörsheim am Main and Lorch am Rhein focus on Riesling, viticulture and the cultural landscape of the Rheingau. This is a regional hiking context, distinct in theme from the local Fountain Trail in Bad Schwalbach.
