Lorch offers several distinct reasons to visit: wine tastings, hiking trails, as well as churches and museums. If you are looking for a hotel in Lorch, you can plan your stay around whichever of these themes interest you most. Different time or organizational requirements apply at each destination.

Wine Tastings and Activities in Lorch

At the Historic Hilchenhaus, the Tourist Information team offers wine tastings featuring wines from various Lorch vintners. Ask there about the current tasting arrangements. Also in the Hilchenhaus, the Lorch town wine shop offers a wide selection of wines from almost all Lorch wineries and a small, informal wine tasting. Check with the wine shop to see whether this tasting is currently available. You can include the Tourist Information wine tasting and the wine shop’s offering as separate options in your plans. The Knights’ Hall in the Hilchenhaus can also be booked for conferences, family celebrations, concerts, civil weddings and receptions.

The Ransel Regional Museum is located in the Ransel district, at the end of Kirchstraße. On selected dates, freshly baked bread from its own small bakehouse is sold on the museum grounds. Sales take place only on specific dates; check the current baking schedule when planning your visit. Ransel is also home to the Feuerpfeil family’s World Heritage Garden, with its magnificent profusion of blossoms.

Hiking: Distinguishing Routes and Access

Numerous long-distance and regional hiking trails cross in Lorch. The Rhein-Ăśber hiking trail is listed in two sections: 6.7 kilometers run through Lorch, with a further 6 kilometers on the opposite bank of the Rhine in Niederheimbach. When planning your hikes, it is important to match these figures to the relevant sections and locations. The route on the opposite bank should be distinguished from the section that runs through Lorch.

Access to Nollig Castle is restricted: you can reach the castle only on foot via the Rheinsteig; it is not possible to drive there. Plan your visit as a walk. This is different from considering the sections of the Rhein-Ăśber, for which distances and locations on both sides of the Rhine are provided.

Church and Museums

St. Martin’s Church is generally open until the gate from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Check these usual opening hours locally before your visit. One special feature of the organ is the Riesling stop: it triggers birdsong and opens a small door concealing two bottles of Riesling and two wine glasses.

The collection at the Robert Struppmann Museum consists primarily of sacred medieval sculptures dating to around 1400. Visits are possible by prior arrangement. The museum also displays archaeological finds from the Lorch area, including a neck ring and a child’s bracelet from the Bronze Age. The sculptures dating to around 1400 and the Bronze Age finds thus represent markedly different historical periods. Lorch was also once a garrison town.

Lorch in the Regional Context

Within the broader Rheingau-Taunus district travel region, the district—with the municipal areas of Rüdesheim am Rhein and Lorch—forms part of the UNESCO World Heritage Upper Middle Rhine Valley. Its cultural landscape is shaped by steep river slopes, steep-slope and terrace vineyards, numerous castles, historic townscapes and the Rhine. This describes the wider World Heritage area and should be distinguished from the focus on individual destinations in Lorch.

The Rheingau-Taunus district is also home to 14 Riesling loops: circular trails 4 to 8 kilometers long between Flörsheim am Main and Lorch am Rhein, dedicated to Riesling, viticulture and the cultural landscape of the Rheingau. They provide a regional complement to the sections of the Rhein-Über that run through Lorch. The two sets of information help you distinguish a specific named trail with sections in Lorch from a regional offering of themed circular routes.
