Morschen brings together monastic history, half-timbered villages and trails along the Fulda. When planning your stay, you can decide whether you would most like to explore historic sites, local attractions, or a route on foot or by bike. You can combine these different interests with a hotel stay in Morschen without making any one excursion the main focus of your trip.

Haydau Monastery: history and present-day use

Haydau Monastery was founded in 1235 and became an economic center in the Fulda Valley in the 14th century. During the Landgraves’ era, the complex was converted into a castle. Today, the monastery is used for conferences, cultural events and celebrations. Guided tours of the monastery complex can be booked. There is also a tour you can follow on your mobile phone, taking you through 800 years of the history of the monastery, castle and garden.

The tour connects the different historical periods of the complex. If you would prefer to be guided, you can book a tour of the monastery complex. Both options explore Haydau’s history; the mobile tour also explicitly includes the garden.

Baroque garden, castle park and monastery café

The Baroque garden was laid out from 1685 under Landgrave Charles around the former monastery, later the Landgraves’ castle. Its design includes terraces, parterres and a high perimeter wall. The historic garden was restored in 2005 and is maintained with the help of local volunteers. The castle park also retains an elaborate staircase with artificial grotto architecture, considered a special attraction of the Haydau garden.

During opening hours, the monastery café in the south wing serves tarts and sheet cakes. Plan your café visit around its opening hours. This lets you combine a visit to the garden and its architectural features with time at the monastery, while keeping the different historical details distinct.

Half-timbered houses and history in the districts

The historic Marktstraße is one of Neumorschen’s defining features. A water channel runs partly uncovered along the street and blends into the very well-preserved streetscape of half-timbered houses. Neumorschen is also home to Jacobi Church, which was renovated in 2008; the village community landscaped its surroundings. If you would like to visit the church interior, you can get the key from the parish office. Arrange your visit with them in advance.

The Wichte local history museum also includes a weaving room. If you plan to visit the museum, check visitor arrangements in advance. The Jewish cemetery in Binsförth is considered the oldest Jewish burial ground in North Hesse. These places add further aspects of local history to a visit to the monastery and garden.

Exploring on foot and by bike

The Haydau Pilgrimage Trail begins at the monastery church, passes through the Fulda Valley to Kapellenberg and continues to Altmorschen. Much of the trail is flat and well surfaced, making it easy for all ages to manage in any weather. In Altmorschen, the route combines half-timbered charm with far-reaching views. It therefore leads from the monastery complex out into the Fulda Valley and ends in a half-timbered village.

There is a cable ferry for cyclists and pedestrians on the Fulda Cycle Route R1 between Morschen-Binsförth and Malsfeld-Beiseförth. It can be used to cross the Fulda, which is about 40 meters wide at this point; the cable ferry itself is about 50 meters long. If you plan to include this crossing in your route, check the latest conditions for your planned trip.
