Anyone considering a stay in Malsfeld will find several clear themes to help plan their trip: long-distance cycling routes, the Fulda, local museums and a history reflected in mills, basket weaving and brewing. The landscape around Malsfeld includes forests, meadows, floodplains and hilltops, as well as protected landscape and nature conservation areas. The Fulda and various streams are also part of this landscape.

Cycling routes through Malsfeld and Beiseförth

The Fulda Cycle Route R1 is 236 kilometres long and runs through Malsfeld and Beiseförth. The Hessian long-distance cycle route R5, also known as the North Hesse Eder-Fulda-Werra Route, runs for 234 kilometres through Beiseförth. When planning your route, it is worth noting both details: the R1 names both places, while the R5 names Beiseförth. These distances refer to long-distance cycling routes, not the length of a single local ride.

A shorter route option is the 22-kilometre Beisetal Mill Cycle Route. It runs from the source near Hainrode through the Beise Valley to its confluence with the Fulda at Beiseförth. The route therefore combines a ride through the valley with a notable destination by the river. The history of the Beise Valley is also reflected in its mill heritage: there were once 26 mills along the Beise. At least twelve still exist by name; some mill wheels have survived and are still in operation.

Those interested in historic brewing sites will also find the Brewery Trail in Malsfeld, a short circular walk. It leads to historic locations associated with local brewing. The long R1 and R5, the Beisetal Mill Cycle Route and the short Brewery Trail thus offer a range of distances and themes.

Museums and culture in Malsfeld

The Basketmakers’ Museum explores the craft from the making process to the finished object. Visitors can see a variety of wickerwork and individual stages of basket making; finished woven goods include cradles, chests and baskets. Historical documents, tools, photographs and display panels also shed light on aspects of rural everyday life, past and present. This offers insight both into the craft techniques and the way of life in which they had a place.

In Beiseförth, the Fairy-Tale Mill presents tales by the Brothers Grimm with explanations and is considered a family day-trip destination with a fairy-tale theme. Miniature houses stand along a small stream, which is fed by a spring on Beisenberg. Directly opposite is a Kneipp facility with benches, continuously supplied with cold spring water from Beisenberg.

The Brewery Museum presents Malsfeld’s centuries-old brewing tradition. Together with the Brewery Trail, it creates a thematic link between the exhibition and the historic sites featured along the circular route. Art exhibitions and cultural events are held at the Art and Culture Mill in Beiseförth. If you would like to plan your trip around an event, check the dates in advance.

The Fulda, recreation area and route planning

The natural swimming lake and campsite lie directly on the Fulda on the outskirts of Beiseförth. The lake was created from a former gravel extraction site. The Fulda itself is also one of the options in the Malsfeld area: you can explore it here by boat or canoe. Water conditions and operator requirements may vary.

The Beiseförth recreation area can be reached by car via the A7 and B 83, by canoe or kayak via the Fulda, and by bicycle via long-distance cycle route R1, which passes 200 metres away. The site has its own landing stage. If you are planning a trip on the water, take the applicable conditions into account. Important for cycle tourists: the bicycle cable ferry across the Fulda between Morschen and Malsfeld is closed until further notice.

Getting here and finding your way around

Malsfeld and Beiseförth have stops on the Kassel–Bebra railway line, with free parking available there. If you are travelling by train, check the timetable for your travel date. The municipality of Malsfeld provides hiking routes to download. As not all hiking trails are signposted yet, it is a good idea to use the available routes before setting off and not to assume that waymarking is continuous.

The local themes offer different points of reference when choosing a place to stay: cycling routes and mill landscapes, the history of crafts and brewing, fairy tales or the Fulda. You can compare these with your travel plans using the relevant route details, location information and visitor guidance.
