For a stay in Hülsa, the landscape and hiking are what define the place. The high plateau at the foot of the Knüll Mountains, Lochbach Gorge and the Lochbach Trail offer different ways to experience nature. The church, a local song tradition and the Advent market add local history and recurring traditions to the picture.

Landscape in the Knüll region

Hülsa lies on a high plateau at the foot of the Knüll Mountains and borders the Oberes Rinnetal Landscape Protection Area. Hülsaer Köpfchen reaches 522 metres. This brings together three specific points of reference in the landscape: the elevation, the Knüll Mountains and the Oberes Rinnetal. They give the natural surroundings of Hülsa their distinctive setting.

Lochbach Gorge and the Lochbach Trail

Lochbach Gorge in Knüll Nature Park is up to 15 metres deep. Its 21 bridges and walkways make it an accessible natural attraction to enjoy in any season. For those who enjoy the outdoors, the gorge stands out not only for its depth but also for its bridges and walkways.

The Lochbach Trail is an approximately 8.5-kilometre circular hike through the gorge. It follows meadow paths, passes wild orchids and offers views towards the Knüll Mountains and Kellerwald; it can be accessed from Homberg-Hülsa. The gorge section within the loop is 1.3 kilometres long. It has bridges, walkways, benches and picnic spots.

The two distance figures refer to different sections: the entire circular route is approximately 8.5 kilometres, while the gorge section is 1.3 kilometres. This makes it easier to gauge the length of the hike without confusing the gorge section with the full loop.

Church, song and Advent market

The Protestant church in Hülsa was built in 1728 and serves as a religious centre for neighbouring villages. The song “Mein Dörflein am Knüll” is also associated with the village: Pastor Samuel Raith wrote it during his time in Hülsa. The church and the song point to two different aspects of local history—the religious role of the building and a musical connection with the Knüll region.

Hülsa’s traditional Christmas market takes place annually on the first weekend of Advent in front of the church. The locally named hot drink “Trompetentraum” is served there. The market’s dates and details may vary from year to year.

Culture in the wider destination of Homberg/Efze

The wider destination of Homberg/Efze offers further historical attractions. St. Mary’s Town Church in Homberg/Efze is a Gothic monument built as a three-aisled hall church; construction began around 1340. The Homberg Synod of 1526 is associated with St. Mary’s Town Church.

Hohenburg Castle rises above Homberg/Efze on a basalt cone and offers views as far as the Habichtswald, Knüll Nature Park and the forests of Kellerwald-Edersee National Park. One of the castle’s historical features is its well: it was once dug 150 metres down into the basalt, making it one of the deepest wells in Germany. A lighting system and an automatic water chute demonstrate its depth.

The Hohenburg Museum in Homberg/Efze displays 7,000 exhibits from different periods in the castle’s history. The permanent exhibition covers the reconstruction of the castle, its history up to its destruction in the Thirty Years’ War, the construction and clearing of the castle well, and life at the castle. The New Gate is also part of the town’s history: it is the only town gate in Homberg/Efze that has survived to the present day.

Homberg/Efze’s annual events programme includes, among others, an Easter market, wine festival, old town festival, night markets, Homberg Artists’ Gathering, autumn market, Clobesmarkt Christmas market and Summer in the City. The dates vary from year to year.

If you’re looking for hotels for a stay in Hülsa, you can choose your focus based on the themes of your trip: Lochbach Gorge and the circular trail are ideal for hiking, while the church, song and Advent market offer local history and tradition.
