Welferode combines a well-preserved village centre with a festival and events shaped by its own local character. For planning your trip, the village’s layout, event dates and the different features of the routes are of particular interest.

Welferode’s Village Centre and History

The character of an agricultural village has been preserved in Welferode’s village centre to this day. The historic centre lies south of Preßnitzer Straße (L 3254); several large farmsteads are clustered along Knüllstraße around the church. Welferode was first mentioned in a document in 1196. The village’s appearance thus brings together its enduring rural character and a historical heritage that reaches far back in time.

Hochlandrock and Village Events

The Hochlandrock Festival was launched in 2001 as an open-air festival in Welferode, a district of Homberg. The festival takes place every year on a meadow with panoramic views of the North Hessian countryside; the setting may vary from one edition to another. If you would like to plan your trip around a particular edition, check its dates and information about the site.

Welferode’s events also include a baking group. It prepares baked goods for baking in the old bakehouse. The village café serves as an open meeting place for people of all ages and backgrounds. A notice dated 8 May 2026 stated that it met every 14 days. Before visiting, check the current calendar to see whether the café is open.

Routes to the Mosenberg

One route to the Mosenberg passes through a nature reserve and continues to the summit. Another route to the Mosenberg near Homberg (Efze) follows field paths towards Welferode and through the small Hopfenberg forest. The descriptions emphasize different features: one is the route through the nature reserve to the summit, while the other follows field paths and woodland on a route towards Welferode. Check trail conditions before setting out.

The Protestant St. Mary’s Town Church in Homberg/Efze is a Gothic monument. Construction of the three-aisled hall church began around 1340. The Homberg Synod was held there in 1526; for this reason, the church is also known as the Reformation Church.

The Hohenburg rises above Homberg/Efze on a basalt cone. From there, views stretch as far as the Habichtswald, Knüll Nature Park and the forests of Kellerwald-Edersee National Park. The castle well was once dug 150 metres deep into the basalt, making it one of the deepest wells in Germany. A lighting system and an automatic water chute demonstrate its depth.

The Hohenburg Museum in Homberg/Efze displays 7,000 exhibits from different periods in the castle’s history. Its permanent exhibition covers the reconstruction of the castle, its history up to its destruction during the Thirty Years’ War, the construction and clearing of the castle well, and life at the castle.

The Lochbach Gorge between Wallenstein and Homberg-Hülsa can be explored on a path running along both sides of the stream. Walkways and bridges follow the 1.3-kilometre route; benches and picnic spots add to the experience. This information relates to Homberg/Efze and offers another distinct aspect of the destination’s landscape.
