Hallgarten offers hiking trails, views and local history as distinct themes for a trip. When looking for a hotel, you can choose your destinations based on whether you are most interested in a connection between places, a route with a place to stop, or historic buildings and art.

Hiking Trails and Views

The Flötenweg, about ten kilometres long, connects Hallgarten with Schloss Johannisberg; the similarly named Flötenwanderweg connects the four districts of Oestrich-Winkel. To find your way, the destination and route connections are therefore more informative than the similar names.

The Hallgarter Sonnenrunde passes the “Revoluzzer Gartenhäuschen” at the lower edge of the village and leads to the elevated Hendelberg area. There, benches invite you to rest and picnic, and the view extends across the vineyards and the Rhine Valley. Along the route described, you will thus find both a named garden house and a place to stop with a view.

The Hallgarter Zange offers a different landscape. This striking rocky outcrop rises 580 metres above the Rhine Valley; an observation tower has stood there since 1884. The panoramic view extends across the Rheingau and into Rheinhessen. In contrast to the resting spot on the Hendelberg, the Zange is defined by its prominent elevation, tower and expansive views.

Historic Sites

The Church of the Assumption of Mary combines Romanesque, Gothic, Baroque and Neo-Gothic stylistic elements. Its oldest tower and parts of the north wall date from the 12th century. The church is also home to the Schrötermadonna, an important Middle Rhine clay sculpture dating from around 1420. The building’s history and the sculpture thus represent two distinct periods within the same church.

The former town hall at ZangerstraĂźe 5 is listed in the monument register of the State of Hesse as a cultural monument under Section 2(1) of the Hessian Monument Protection Act, on historical and urban-planning grounds.

Secret parliamentary conferences were held at the Itzstein’sches Gutshaus from 1832 to 1847. They can be regarded as a precursor to the first German national parliament in Frankfurt in 1848/49.

Historic Sites in Oestrich-Winkel

The wider destination of Oestrich-Winkel offers further points of historical interest: the historic wine-loading crane on the banks of the Rhine dates from 1745. The Basilica of St. Aegidius in Mittelheim dates from the 10th century, and the Graues Haus in Winkel from the 12th century. Together, these dates represent different historical periods in Oestrich-Winkel.

Wine and Seasonal Activities

At Hallgarten’s wine-tasting stand, winegrowers and wines change weekly. Check the specific arrangements before your visit.

The Hallgarten Winzerfest is held outdoors every year on the first weekend in August in the market square. Seven wine stands and a winegrower’s courtyard are grouped there. Check the exact dates and programme for your chosen year before planning your visit around the festival.

Hallgarten outdoor swimming pool has an unheated swimming pool with a water slide, a non-swimmer area, a paddling pool, a kiosk and a baby-changing room. As seasonal opening and facility details may change, check the latest information before planning a swim.
