Oestrich-Winkel: History, Wine and Trails
Accommodation in Oestrich-Winkel
Historic buildings, wine experiences and trails through vineyards and forests give Oestrich-Winkel different highlights for a stay. When planning, it is worth distinguishing between visits with fixed or seasonal opening times and the routes described here.
Buildings and Guided Tours
On the banks of the Rhine in Oestrich-Winkel stands the historic wine-loading crane, built in 1745. You can visit its interior, including the exhibition, from April to October on the first weekend of each month between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. Check visiting hours before you travel. Two other buildings offer different historical reference points: the Basilica of St. Aegidius in Mittelheim dates from the 10th century, and the Graues Haus in Winkel from the 12th century.
At the Brentano House in Winkel, you can visit the historic rooms on a specialist guided tour led by Angela von Brentano. Open tours that require no advance booking are offered on selected dates. Dates vary, so check the city’s current events calendar before your visit.
Wine Tasting Stands and Schloss Vollrads
There are wine tasting stands in Winkel by the ferry, in Oestrich by the crane, and in Hallgarten. The winemakers and wines change weekly. The stands are available seasonally, and availability may vary.
Schloss Vollrads offers a wine shop, an estate restaurant serving regional cuisine, and a courtyard wine bar. The wine shop is located in the former coach house in the castle courtyard. During opening hours, you can taste wines there without an appointment. The events program includes children’s tours and wine and hiking experiences; check specific dates and the current program in advance. Schloss Vollrads’ operating information may also change.
Trails Through Vineyards and Forests
The Flötenweg runs for about ten kilometers parallel to the Rhine, above the river, through the vineyards of all the districts of Oestrich-Winkel to Schloss Johannisberg. The 240-kilometer long-distance cycle route R3 also passes through Oestrich-Winkel. You can hike and cycle in the Oestrich-Winkel forest; numerous circular trails start at the Kreistanne forest car park.
A section of the Rheingau Monastery Trail starts at Oestrich-Winkel station in the district of Mittelheim. It leads through the vineyards to the rest pavilion in Honigberg, where it meets the Rheinsteig. The start and end points described here give you a specific reference for planning this section.
Forest and Outdoor Pool
The Oestrich-Winkel forest provides habitat for, among other species, wildcats, black storks, eagle owls, red deer, lynxes and wolves. These species are among the forest’s varied natural highlights.
Hallgarten outdoor pool is located on the upper edge of the village. It has an unheated swimming pool with a water slide, a non-swimmer area and a paddling pool. The pool operates seasonally; check current opening times before your visit.
Rail Connections in the Rheingau-Taunus District
The right-bank Rhine railway line runs from Koblenz via Rüdesheim am Rhein and Wiesbaden to Frankfurt am Main.
