Haingrund brings together Roman history, hiking and cultural themes ranging from ancient frontier fortifications to home computers. When planning your trip, you can easily distinguish between these interests: the Windlücke and Limes routes are ideal if you want to focus on nature and archaeology; the Yesterchips Museum and the Holy Cross Church offer different cultural highlights. This way, you can decide whether you would mainly like to spend time outdoors or include individual historical and cultural sites in your plans.

Roman Traces and Trails in Haingrund

Parts of the Roman Limes are visible on a hill in the direction of Vielbrunn. The Windlücke in Haingrund is an inviting place to hike and offers far-reaching views. The HG1 circular hiking trail also invites you to explore Haingrund on foot. Together, they offer different points of interest: visible traces of the Roman frontier and trails where the landscape itself is the destination.

The “Limes Loop through Dense Forests” runs south from the little castle and the Limes reconstruction, following the rampart through dense forests to the Windlücke small fort. The ridge is best explored off-road by mountain bike or on a hike. Check current trail conditions before setting out.

The Geo-Nature Park offers the guided hike “Archaeology on the Odenwald Limes.” It leads from the “Lützelbacher Schlösschen” numerus fort past two tower sites to the Windlücke small fort. If you plan to join this tour, check the dates in advance.

Museum and Art in Haingrund

The Yesterchips Home Computer and Video Game Console Museum is a privately run, amateur-operated museum in Haingrund dedicated to home computers and video game consoles. It is housed in the listed “Old School” building at Erbacher Straße 1. The collection includes home computers and consoles dating from the 1970s onward. Most exhibits are switched on and are intended for visitors to use. Check the current visiting arrangements before planning your museum visit.

The Holy Cross Church also offers an art-historical point of interest. It has a Stations of the Cross with seven stations, designed and cast in bronze in 1988 by Claus Kilian (1928–2022), a visual artist and deacon from Braunschweig. A copy of the Hallgarten Madonna is mounted on the wall there, on a sandstone corbel. The Stations of the Cross and the Madonna thus differ both in their artistic form and in the way they are presented in the church.

Lützelbach: Further Limes and Church History

The wider destination of Lützelbach also offers further connections to the Odenwald Limes. Eight tower sites, designated watchtowers 10/5 to 10/12, lie within the Lützelbach municipal area. The Limes hiking trail gives access within the municipality to the Windlücke small fort, the Lützelbach numerus fort and a total of eight tower sites, except for those located in open fields. At watchtower 10/8, a short archaeological circular trail leads to the particularly visible excavations carried out there by the Reich Limes Commission.

A faithful reconstruction of a Limes palisade, just under 40 m long, has been built right beside a hiking trail near the Lützelbach numerus fort. Another historical highlight is in Rimhorn: it is home to the oldest of the seven churches in the municipality of Lützelbach. Originally a Romanesque hall church, it is thought to date from the 10th century. The choir was added to the nave around 1000 AD, and a sacristy was added in 1523.
