In Hasselroth, hiking trails and scenic views meet local history. Around Niedermittlau, routes lead through forests and past distinctive landscape and cultural sites; the local history museum focuses on life and livelihoods in the villages. This lets you plan your time around nature and regional history.

Hiking Trails and Scenic Views

The Niedermittlauer Berkopp Loop combines scenic paths along the forest edge and dense woodland with the site of the former Center of Europe and the old clay pits nature reserve. The route brings together a range of impressions: open paths along the forest edge, woodland sections and named stops with historical or nature conservation significance.

The panoramic trail on the Niedermittlauer Heiligenkopf offers a distinctive perspective. From there, the view stretches across Hasselroth and the Freigericht Bay to Frankfurt and the Taunus. If you particularly value scenic views on a hike, this trail offers a different experience from the Berkopp Loop, which combines forest, forest-edge paths and other stops.

The European Cultural Trail Hasselroth, approximately 14 to 16 kilometres long, passes through Gondsroth, Neuenhaßlau and Niedermittlau and takes in their sights. Suggested starting points are the Hessian Youth Forest Home and the Edelweißhütte on the Wingert. The approximate distance and two possible starting points can help you plan your route; also check current trail conditions before setting out.

Nature and Environmental Education

The 11-hectare Hässeler Weiher nature reserve lies north of Neuenhaßlau. It is protected for its diverse plant life and bird population. The old clay pits, featured in the description of the Berkopp Loop, and the Hässeler Weiher are two named nature conservation sites in Hasselroth.

Environmental education is also part of the local scene: in the protected teaching forest in Niedermittlau, the German Forest Protection Association operates the “First Hessian Youth Forest Home,” with an environmental education information centre. A nature conservation association has set up a nature and bird conservation information centre in the former sewage treatment plant in Niedermittlau.

Local History Museum and Village History

The Hasselroth Local History Museum opened in 1988 in a schoolhouse built in 1847. It depicts life and livelihoods in Gondsroth, Neuenhaßlau and Niedermittlau up to the end of the 1950s. Its focus is therefore on the three villages and a clearly defined period in their more recent history.

The local activities on display include diamond cutting and cigar production. The museum also exhibits a hand-operated fire engine from 1894. Together, these objects provide a tangible insight into different aspects of village life and work in the past. They complement the themes you encounter outdoors on the cultural trails and at the named stops, adding to the story of Hasselroth.

The museum offers guided tours, as well as additional tours of the village, particularly for kindergarten, school and youth groups. A tour can be combined with activities such as washing clothes as people did 100 years ago. Please contact the museum directly to arrange the details.

A Look Inside St. Lawrence’s Church

The St. Lawrence Church in Niedermittlau also offers a glimpse into local history. Its interior is simply designed, a character shaped by strict Reformed principles. The connection between its design and religious heritage adds a cultural history perspective to the themes of village life, work and landscape.
