Gieselwerder lies directly on the Weser, between the river and the Reinhardswald. Meadows and fields stretch along the foot of the Reinhardswald. This gives your travel plans a clear landscape setting; Mühlenplatz and historic traces in the village add to the picture of its riverside location. Which of these aspects interests you most can be decided by looking at the specific visitor and route options.

Mühlenplatz and water technology

At Mühlenplatz Gieselwerder, water from the Lumbach is channelled along small, elegant waterways to the watermills and used to power the milling equipment. During the 2026 season, the site is open to visitors on Thursdays and Sundays from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. If Mühlenplatz is on your itinerary, take this seasonal opening schedule into account when planning your day. The site also features faithfully recreated miniatures of watermills, castles and palaces, churches and town halls. The models are built to scales of 1:25 and 1:40.

Castle remains and local history

Historic half-timbered houses cluster around the site of Gieselwerder’s former moated castle, where the town hall now stands. Remains of the curtain wall, a gate and a round tower survive in the surrounding wall. Iron cannonballs are displayed at the gate; they were embedded in oak planks. They were recovered from the Weser directly in front of the castle during the first bridge construction in 1899. The Protestant Christuskirche Gieselwerder was built in 1813. The Gieselwerder local history workshop displays murals of old Gieselwerder and archaeological finds from the ground. As part of the German Fairy Tale Route, Gieselwerder is known as “Snow White’s Village.”

Eco Trail and cycle routes

The Eco Pfad Burgen Museen Wasser Gieselwerder trail accompanies visitors as they explore the village and spans a broad sweep of history: from the castles fought over in the Middle Ages and the ford across the Weser to shipping and timber rafting in the last century. The trail is maintained, is around 6 km long and can be shortened to 4 km via Neustadtstraße. The route description reflects the status as of April 2013, so check the current route before setting out. The shortened option is therefore around two kilometres shorter than the full route.

Various routes are also described for cyclists. The main route of the Weser Cycle Path passes the bridge at Gieselwerder and then continues along the right bank of the Weser. A circular cycling tour along the Weser follows the R1 cycle path on the left bank to Gieselwerder, crosses the river there and returns towards Hann. Münden along the Weser Cycle Path. The routes described therefore differ in which riverbank they follow and where they cross the river. Check the current routes before planning your trip.
