Obergude: Water, Half-Timbered Houses and Orchard Meadows
Accommodation in Obergude
Obergude brings together natural and cultural attractions that appeal to different interests when choosing a travel destination: the Gudebach and its headwater streams, the water trail in the Gudegrund, orchard meadows and wetlands, as well as a historic rectory. This gives you options for planning your trip, from focusing on the water to exploring local architectural history or enjoying a stay with a connection to horses. The topics below can help you tailor your trip to what you would like to experience and discover in Obergude.
Water and Landscape in Obergude
Several smaller streams rising in the surrounding hills converge within Obergude and flow into the Gude. This gives you two ways to think about water here: as part of the village landscape and as the focus of a named trail. Traditional orchard meadows and individual trees bearing many old fruit varieties shape other parts of the landscape. There is also a reed meadow and several wetlands. These landscape features change in appearance throughout the year, so different impressions take center stage depending on the season. You can therefore choose between waterways, old fruit varieties and wetlands as different points of interest in the landscape.
The Water Trail in the Gudegrund
The water trail in the Gudegrund follows the Gudebach from Obergude to Baumbach. East of Obergude, the trail passes one of the Gude’s three springs, where headwater streams flow beneath a canopy of trees. In the wider Alheim destination, installations at various stops along the water trail in the Gudegrund promote awareness of the need to use water responsibly. These are two different aspects of the same trail to help you find your bearings: the route along the Gudebach and the spring area east of Obergude.
Rectory and Horse Farm
Obergude’s historic rectory dates from around 1600 and is a half-timbered structure built using the half-timber frame construction method. For architecture enthusiasts, these two details refer to different things: half-timber frame construction describes the building method, while around 1600 indicates the approximate period. Pony rides are offered at Hasenmühle horse farm in Alheim-Obergude, which is also a station for trail riders. If you would like to include one of these activities in your trip, please check the current arrangements before your visit.
Landscape Cinema and Orientation
The “Cinema Natura” landscape cinema on Metzebacher Höhe has nine cinema seats and is located about 200 m off the trail. For planning purposes, you can distinguish between the two locations: the Gudegrund trail is defined by its route between Obergude and Baumbach, while Cinema Natura is described by its approximate distance from the trail. This gives you different options for enjoying a nature or cultural experience.
Alheim as an Additional Setting
In the wider Alheim destination, signposted hiking trails run around Sterkelshausen. Shelters and benches offer places to rest and linger, some with views and decorative features to enjoy. Sterkelshausen is easy to reach via cycle paths and side roads away from the main road; as individual route conditions can change, please check them before setting out.
