Hiking and Cycling Around Mörfelden-Walldorf
The hiking trail marked with a red fox passes by Mönchbruch. The nearby Mönchbruch nature reserve, with its many paths and tree-lined avenues, is ideal for long walks and extended bike rides. This adds a nearby destination to the local network of trails, without equating the paths in the protected area with the hiking routes around the town.
A nearly 2.4-kilometer loop runs along the swimming area at Walldorfer See, making it suitable for a stroll. If you plan to visit the swimming area, check current operating conditions and seasonal swimming details before your visit. The Gundwiesen offer another option for cycling: they lie between Gundwiesensee and Gundhof, and you can ride along the Gundbach stream. The Groß-Gerau district’s cycle route network connects Mörfelden-Walldorf with neighboring municipalities via more than seven routes.
Some individual trails have their own particular focus. The Regionalpark circular route runs along Oberwaldsee. The Tree of the Year Avenue between Forsthaus and Oberwaldberg can be explored on foot or by bike and offers educational insights. These details highlight specific local options: a measured loop around Walldorfer See, cycling in the Gundwiesen and other routes in the regional network.
Lakes, Protected Areas and Views
Oberwaldsee and Schnepfensee form a waterscape with many fish species and a diverse range of bird and plant life. Oberwaldsee has a water surface area of 12 hectares, while Schnepfensee covers 3 hectares. The area in and around Gundwiesensee is protected. Oberwaldberg offers panoramic views across the region, providing a different kind of nature experience from the paths along the lakes.
Local nature is also celebrated through an annual planting: every year, the town of Mörfelden-Walldorf plants the respective Tree of the Year together with the German Forest Protection Association. Of the 96 natural monuments in the Groß-Gerau district, 11 are in Mörfelden-Walldorf. This number may change if the designations are revised.
Town History and Culture
The Mörfelden Museum offers insights into the town’s history and the everyday life of its residents since the first signs of settlement in the Bronze Age. The rest of the permanent exhibition focuses on the everyday life of the people of Mörfelden from around 1870 to 1945. The museum thus spans the period from early signs of settlement to a specific chapter in the town’s more recent history.
The sculpture park in Bürgerpark Mörfelden, on Parkstraße, offers another way to experience art in public spaces. The Sports and Cultural Affairs Office and the Friends of the Sculpture Park association jointly present object art, sculptures and installation works by artists from different generations. The cultural program is ongoing; individual editions may vary.
Since 1986, the Hütten Church has stood between the districts of Mörfelden and Walldorf. Together with two original sections of the former runway wall, it is a prominent feature of Mörfelden-Walldorf’s post-war history. The Hütten Church and the wall sections are also considered symbols of one of Germany’s largest environmental movements to date. The townscape thus brings together religious architectural history, post-war history and the memory of an environmental movement.
