Kelsterbach can be explored from several perspectives: the City Museum presents the town’s history and its varied connections to the Main River. Landscape and nature watching take centre stage at Staudenweiher pond and the Kelsterbach Terrace, while the Regionalpark Climate Route focuses on ecological relationships. When planning your stay, consider which of these themes interest you most.

Town History at the City Museum

On the ground floor of Kelsterbach City Museum, you can get an overview of the town’s history since the 16th century. One of the special topics is the Kelsterbach porcelain manufactory: the museum displays numerous products. Landgrave Ludwig VIII of Hesse-Darmstadt founded the manufactory in 1761. Faience and stoneware were also produced locally from 1765 to 1840. The collection therefore includes both products from the manufactory and other locally made ceramic wares.

Another focus is the Roman provincial period. The museum documents the excavation of the building “Auf der Steinmauer,” dating from 220 to 260 AD. It is associated with a stag cult dedicated to the Celtic god Cernunnos. This interpretation sits alongside the museum’s other historical topics, without conflating the different periods.

A model of the former Renaissance Schloss Wolfenburg is also part of the exhibition. Count Wolfgang of Ysenburg-Ronneburg had the castle built between 1564 and 1580; it was destroyed several times during the Thirty Years’ War. A dedicated museum room focuses on the Main River. There you can see river finds of various ages, objects related to timber rafting and fishing, preserved river fish, and ship models. The exhibits give the river its own place in the museum alongside town history, crafts and architectural history.

River Landscape and Nature Watching

The Kelsterbach Terrace is an Ice Age river terrace of the Main. The steep riverbank at the terrace is up to 17 metres high. Staudenweiher pond offers a different landscape: the quiet lake is surrounded by dense woodland. From the viewing platform, you can see the whole lake; it also offers good opportunities for observing nature and birds.

For cyclists and walkers, Staudenweiher pond is directly on the Regionalpark Route. It can be reached from SĂĽdpark after a short walk. Both the route and the walking path from SĂĽdpark are useful points of reference for a visit, without specifying a particular walking time.

Climate Route and Other Impressions

At the “Flusswälder” (“River Forests”) station on the Regionalpark Climate Route, a model set into the ground simulates a flood event. You can observe how water behaves in a landscape with and without a floodplain forest. The “Flora Fauna” station shows how climate change affects animals and plants along the Main and changes ecological relationships. The route therefore explores both how water behaves in different landscapes and how nature is changing.

The historic lower village is also among Kelsterbach’s cultural highlights; it is home to several beautifully restored half-timbered houses. A large water playground offers children fun and a chance to cool off in summer. Its seasonal appeal makes it particularly relevant when planning a summer stay. Visiting the Kelsterbach Main River promenade is free of charge.
