Discover Neuhof: Cycling Routes and Local History
Accommodation in Neuhof
When choosing a destination, Neuhof offers several clearly distinct themes: the R3 long-distance cycle route passes through the town center; hiking trails focus on the solar system and potash mining; and other routes lead past notable places or scenic viewpoints. These are complemented by a section of the Via Regia, the history of the moated castle and local carnival traditions. If you are looking for a hotel in Neuhof, these different highlights can help you choose a location that suits your travel interests.
Cycling between the town center and the pump track
The Hessian R3 long-distance cycle route, also known as the Rhine-Main-Kinzig cycle route, runs from Rüdesheim am Rhein to Tann in the Hessian Rhön and passes right through the town center of Neuhof. At the edge of town in the direction of Dorfborn, the Neuhof pump track is located directly on the R3. It has a separate kids’ track, and its barrier-free design also enables wheelchair users to use it.
Comparing two themed hiking trails
Opened in 1999, the Planet Trail connects Neuhof and Kalbach and is about ten kilometers long. Eleven information boards share facts about the sun, moons, planets and comets. The starting point is above the large bus parking lot at Johannes Kepler School, by the sun information board. The stops give the route connecting the two towns a focus on natural science.
Created in 2023, the anniversary themed hiking trail “Der Kaliweg” (The Potash Trail) is a 17.4-kilometer circular route that starts in the center of Neuhof and follows a wide arc around the municipality. It is intended for both residents and tourists. Five information boards explain potash mining in Neuhof and the Fulda/Werra potash district. They cover the history of the Neuhof mine, work above and below ground, geology and the uses of potash products. At 17.4 kilometers, the Kaliweg is longer than the Planet Trail, which is about ten kilometers long. The routes also differ in shape: the Planet Trail connects Neuhof and Kalbach, while the Kaliweg is designed as a circular route around the municipality.
Hiking trails and historic routes
The Opperzer Berg Panorama Trail passes the apiary educational center, the Marien Grotto and St. Michael’s Church. The Fliedetal+Kemmete Panorama Trail follows a different route: it runs along the Fliede toward Neuhof, along a landscaped path above the highway tunnel with benches and impressive viewpoints, and then through Neuhof back to Dallesplatz.
A visible old section of the Via Regia between Neuhof-Ellers and Fulda is now once again part of the Way of St. James toward Frankfurt. Here, the old road section is also incorporated into a modern pilgrimage route.
Castle history and carnival
Neuhof Moated Castle was originally built as a fortress. Around 1250, Prince-Abbot Heinrich IV of Erthal (1249–1261) fortified the complex with new walls, fences and ditches. Carnival is celebrated in the municipality of Neuhof with great dedication and inventiveness.
