Hiking Trails and Wayfinding
The municipal hiking trail network comprises 20 routes. Their starting points are in various locations in Großenlüder and its districts. The hiking trails use the standardized designation “Rhön-Rundweg-Großenlüder” and are marked with blue signs bearing white lettering. The Lüdertaler is different: its signs are white with red lettering. This color scheme is a practical distinction to look out for when finding your way. As trail signage may be updated, follow the directions on site.
Sodegarten and Salt Production in the Past
The Sodegarten Historic Nature Park lies almost like an island within the Lüder; a narrow wooden bridge leads into it. There is a demonstration saltworks at Sodegarten. On a guided tour, you can learn how salt was produced in the past. Check on site whether a tour is available.
Local History Museum and Nativity Scene Exhibition
The former collegiate chapter house, dating from 1690, houses the local history museum and the International Nativity Scene Exhibition. The museum brings together local and church history with geological and archaeological topics. Its historical collection includes the handwritten chronicle of the Lords of Lüder from 1747, which is shown only on special occasions. Other focal points include fossils from the limestone beds of Müs and Bimbach, as well as archaeological finds, including Celtic artifacts and finds from burial mounds.
Nativity Trail in the Historic Town Center
Every two years, the Nativity Trail follows a route through the historic town center that takes around 90 minutes and features nativity scenes from different cultures. Unlike the hiking trail network, with its 20 routes and various starting points, it is a single themed walking tour. Dates vary with each edition; check the dates if you want to plan your trip around it. The approximate duration helps you plan how much time to allow for the walk.
Cycling in Großenlüder
Großenlüder has a cycling network. Municipal plans focus on connections to nearby and long-distance cycling routes. It is important to note that the cycling network already exists; the connections are the subject of municipal plans.
