Münster (Hessen) combines nature experiences with cultural offerings and local history. To help you choose, it is worth looking at the different highlights: from the Wisentwald nature trail and circular hiking routes to events at the ARThaus.

Nature experiences around Wisentwald

The Wisentwald nature trail is located on the grounds of the former Muna munitions depot in Münster-Breitefeld. As a recreational and educational attraction for all ages, it focuses on environmental protection and nature conservation. The trail is about 1.5 kilometres long and features five interactive stations for movement, exploration and reflection. It combines a manageable trail length with several themed stops.

The trail may only be explored on foot or by bicycle. Wisentwald and the MUNATUR exhibition can be visited independently during opening hours. Check the municipality’s Muna page for current opening hours before your visit. The Muna grounds also have a viewing platform from which you can observe wisent and Przewalski’s horses. The animals may not always be present.

The different focuses can help you choose between the offerings: Wisentwald centres on environmental protection and nature conservation, with its five stations. The Wassererlebnisband Gersprenz themed cycling route passes through Münster and shares information about nature, the land and its people on signs with QR codes. Circular routes and activities in the Bürgerpark

Circular hiking routes make it possible to explore Münster and its two districts. The Wassererlebnisband Gersprenz themed cycling route offers a different way to discover the area, combining cycling with information about the region. This gives you the choice between circular hiking routes and a themed cycling route without requiring you to follow any particular circular route.

Münster’s Bürgerpark has a playground and a mini-golf course. If you plan to include these activities in your visit, check beforehand whether they are currently open. Both facilities add another way to spend time in town alongside its nature and culture attractions.

Remembrance and culture in Münster and Altheim

Since 7 April 2025, a total of 21 Stolpersteine by artist and sculptor Gunter Demnig have commemorated Jewish residents at eight locations in Münster and Altheim. They remember those who were expelled, persecuted and murdered during the Nazi era. Remembrance is thus present at several locations and forms an important historical focus of a visit.

The Museum an der Gersprenz is housed in the historic Langsmühle on the Gersprenz. A museum was established in the Langsmühle in 2005/2006. It is run by the Heimat- und Geschichtsverein e.V. on behalf of the municipality of Münster. The ARThaus, the Old Town Hall in Münster-Altheim, hosts theatre performances, exhibitions, concerts, readings and other cultural events. Regional context: Darmstadt-Dieburg

If you consider Münster as part of the wider Darmstadt-Dieburg destination, this adds a distinct regional perspective. The district encompasses the Hessian Rhine Plain, the Untermainebene, the Messeler Hügelland, the Reinheimer Hügelland, the Vorderer Odenwald and the Sandsteinodenwald. These landscapes are part of the district and should not be confused with the attractions in Münster.

Another distinct subject within the wider Darmstadt-Dieburg destination is the Messel Pit UNESCO World Heritage Site. This fossil site is known for its uniquely preserved and diverse fossils, which document the history of the Earth 47 million years ago. The visitor centre conveys the history and significance of Germany’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site. You can focus your stay on Münster or add regional themes, while keeping the local attractions distinct from the wider context.
